Organizations Filed Purposes:
OUR MISSION IS TO WORK WITH PEOPLE IN ECONOMICALLY MARGINALIZED NEIGHBORHOODS TO DEVELOP RESIDENT LEADERS, CULTIVATE COMMUNITY FOOD SYSTEMS, AND CREATE AN ECONOMY OWNED BY THE COMMUNITY.
"THROUGH ITS RE:FARM INITIATIVE, RE:VISION HAS ESTABLISHED OVER 2,000 ORGANIC VEGETABLE GARDENS WITH LOW-INCOME FAMILIES, COLLECTIVELY SAVING THOSE FAMILIES OVER $1 MILLION IN GROCERY BILLS, MAKING IT ONE OF THE LARGEST COMMUNITY FOOD JUSTICE PROGRAMS IN THE COUNTRY. THIS RESIDENT-LED FOOD SYSTEM HAS PRODUCED MORE THAN 600,000 POUNDS OF FRESH PRODUCE IN THE MIDDLE OF A FOOD DESERT. RE:VISION'S COMMUNITY FOOD SYSTEM WORK HAS ALSO PIONEERED CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE COOKING AND NUTRITION CURRICULUM, DESIGNED TO MEET LOW-INCOME FAMILIES WHERE THEY ARE AT, AND TAUGHT BY CERTIFIED PROMOTORAS. THROUGH ITS RE:UNITE INITIATIVE, RE:VISION HAS DEVELOPED A SUCCESSFUL PROMOTORA MODEL, INVESTING OVER $1.1M INTO HIRING AND TRAINING MOTHERS FROM THE NEIGHBORHOOD TO BE HEALTH AND WELLNESS LEADERS WHO TEACH THEIR NEIGHBORS HOW TO GROW THEIR OWN FOOD, AS WELL AS HOW TO PREPARE HEALTHY MEALS. RE:VISION'S HAS ENGAGED ITS PROMOTORAS OVER 4,000 HOURS OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING, AND THEY HAVE IN TURN CONDUCTED OVER 18,000 HOME VISITS THROUGHOUT SOUTHWEST DENVER. THROUGH RE:VISION'S MODEL, PROMOTORAS ARE BUILDING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY, WHILE CONNECTING FAMILIES TO GREATLY NEEDED RESOURCES. SEEKING TO LEVERAGE THE POWER BUILT THROUGH RELATIONSHIPS AND FOOD TOWARDS GREATER COMMUNITY SELF-DETERMINATION, RE:VISION LAUNCHED ITS RE:OWN INITIATIVE TO BUILD COMMUNITY WEALTH THROUGH A NEIGHBORHOOD-OWNED ECONOMY. CENTRAL TO THIS INITIATIVE IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF RISE WESTWOOD, WHICH IS TRANSFORMING A 1.7+ ACRE JUNKYARD INTO A COMMUNITY CAMPUS SERVING DIVERSE NEEDS AND BRINGING COMMUNITY MEMBERS TOGETHER, INCLUDING THE INCUBATION OF ONE OF THE FIRST GROCERY STORES OWNED BY A LOW-INCOME COMMUNITY IN THE NATION, THE WESTWOOD FOOD COOPERATIVE (WFC). THE WFC CURRENTLY OPERATES A PILOT MARKET ON SITE. RISE PROVIDES SPACE FOR WESTWOOD UNIDOS' LA CASITA, A COMMERCIAL KITCHEN AND ENTREPRENEURIAL INCUBATOR, A COMMUNITY TRAINING CENTER AND AN ART GALLERY/ COMMUNITY EVENT SPACE."
