Advocacy to Protect Children: Child victims exposed to domestic violence have greater rates of behavioral, social, and emotional challenge; cognitive delays; and long-term psychological effects. The Domestic Violence Program provides legal help for children involved in civil protection order cases in Denver County to keep them safe from the domestic violence in their homes. Organization staff and volunteer attorneys serve as guardians ad litem on these cases, conducting investigations; interviewing the parties, the children, and other collateral; drafting reports; and, ultimately, making recommendations to the court regarding parenting orders to further the child's best interests.
Advocacy for Caregivers: When children have consistent attachments to caring adults, they do better in school, form healthier relationships, and have more positive developmental outcomes. Thousands of children in Colorado are living with grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, foster families, and other non-relative caregivers because their parents are unable to provide them with a safe and stable home. The Caregiver Advocacy Program assists nonparent caregivers in accessing resources and navigating the court system to promote security and stability in a child's life and remove obstacles to necessary health care and educational resources.
Safe Babies Court Team Initiative: The early years for infants and toddlers are crucial to their healthy development and long-term well- being. Mindful of the unique needs of this young population, the Safe Babies Court Team seeks to implement an enhanced court approach to serving children, ages zero to three, and their families who are involved in child abuse and neglect proceedings. The Organization established Colorado's first Safe Babies Court in Pueblo County, expanding to Arapahoe County during 2020, with additional locations likely in the coming years.
