THE MISSION OF MILE HIGH YOUTH CORPS IS TO HELP YOUTH MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THEMSELVES AND THEIR COMMUNITY THROUGH MEANINGFUL SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES AND EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES.
FOUNDED AS YEAR ONE, INC., MILE HIGH YOUTH CORPS (MHYC) WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1992 TO ADDRESS THE EDUCATIONAL AND EMPLOYMENT NEEDS OF DENVER'S YOUTH WHILE CONNECTING THEM TO THEIR COMMUNITY AND THE OUTDOORS. THAT FIRST YEAR, 20 YOUTH SERVED DENVER NEIGHBORHOODS THROUGH A SINGLE 10-WEEK PROGRAM. TODAY, MHYC IS A COMPREHENSIVE, YEAR-ROUND MODEL SERVING 200 YOUNG ADULTS ANNUALLY ACROSS 23 COLORADO COUNTIES - FROM BROOMFIELD COUNTY ALL THE WAY SOUTH TO THE NEW MEXICO BORDER - HAVING THE LARGEST GEOGRAPHIC FOOTPRINT AMONGST COLORADO'S EIGHT ACCREDITED YOUTH CORPS. YOUTH, AGES 17-24, RECEIVE ON-THE-JOB TRAINING AND CAREER READINESS PROGRAMS LEADING TO THE OBTAINMENT OF INDUSTRY-RECOGNIZED CERTIFICATIONS, AN AMERICORPS EDUCATION AWARD AND LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP THEM ACHIEVE THEIR EDUCATIONAL AND EMPLOYMENT GOALS. THESE YOUNG ADULTS, CALLED CORPSMEMBERS, ARE EMPLOYED AND TRAINED TO SERVE ON COMMUNITY-BASED PROJECTS RELATED TO LAND CONSERVATION, ENERGY AND WATER CONSERVATION, HEALTHCARE OR CONSTRUCTION. WHILE MANY CORPSMEMBERS HAVE SIGNIFICANT BARRIERS (HOUSING, TRANSPORTATION, CHILD CARE, ETC.) TO ACCOMPLISHING EDUCATIONAL AND EMPLOYMENT RELATED BENCHMARKS, MHYC IS COMMITTED AND INTENTIONAL IN ITS APPROACH TO REMOVING THOSE BARRIERS AND ENSURING ALL YOUNG PEOPLE ARE POSITIONED FOR LONG-TERM SUCCESS. TO DATE, MILE HIGH YOUTH CORPS HAS SERVED OVER 4,100 CORPSMEMBERS, PROVIDED 3.6 MILLION IN AMERICORPS EDUCATION AWARDS, AND DELIVERED 1.4 MILLION HOURS OF SERVICE. CORPSMEMBERS HAVE BUILT OR MAINTAINED MORE THAN 260 MILES OF TRAIL, HELPED BUILD OVER 1,100 AFFORDABLE HOUSING UNITS, AND RETROFITTED OVER 45,000 LOW-INCOME HOMES FOR ENERGY AND WATER SAVINGS. MHYC ALUMNI FROM YEARS PAST ARE FOREST RANGERS, WILDLAND FIREFIGHTERS, ELECTRICIANS, CERTIFIED NURSE ASSISTANTS, COMMUNITY NON-PROFIT LEADERS AND ADVOCATES OF THE ENVIRONMENT. IN 2019, MHYC PROGRAMS PROVIDED 199 UNDUPLICATED CORPSMEMBERS WITH ACCESS AND OPPORTUNITY TO CAREER PATHWAY PROGRAMS IN LAND AND ENERGY AND WATER CONSERVATION, CONSTRUCTION AND HEALTHCARE. CORPSMEMBERS CONTRIBUTED A TOTAL OF 97,668 SERVICE HOURS AND EARNED 296,221 IN AMERICORPS EDUCATION AWARDS. OF THE 199 UNDUPLICATED CORPSMEMBERS: - 86% SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THEIR TERM OF SERVICE - 83% EARNED AN AMERICORPS EDUCATION AWARD TO BE USED TOWARDS POST- SECONDARY EDUCATION - 85% OF CORPSMEMBERS WHO COMPLETED THEIR PROGRAM WERE PLACED INTO EMPLOYMENT OR POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION WITHIN THREE MONTHS FOLLOWING PROGRAM COMPLETION - 98% SELF-REPORTED AT THE END OF THEIR TERM THAT MHYC HAD A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THEIR LIFE AND FUTURE. IN ADDITION, 99% OF PROJECT SPONSORS REPORTED BEING SATISFIED OR HIGHLY SATISFIED WITH MHYC CREWS. COMMUNITY/ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT INCLUDED: - 891 ACRES OF LAND IMPROVED - 29 MILES OF TRAIL MAINTAINED - 52,139 INVASIVE TREES REMOVED - 201,967,275 GALLONS OF WATER CONSERVED - 1,440 LOW-INCOME CLIENT HOMES HAVE BEEN RETROFITTED TO INSTALL ENERGY & WATER CONSERVATION MEASURES, REDUCING UTILITY BILLS AND INCREASING CONSERVATION SAVINGS - 153 UNITS OF AFFORTABLE HOUSING BUILT WITH DENVER HOUSING AUTHORITY
