Youth on Record empowers Colorado's under-served youth to achieve their academic, artistic, and personal best by employing local professional artists as their educators. Vision: Youth on Record's vision is for youth to discover how their voice and value can create a better world.
Program Outcomes FY 19-20In spite of the significant challenges presented through the COVID -19 pandemic, Youth on Record (YOR) has been innovating and iterating and has maintained steady - albeit reduced - program service delivery. In mid-March, all Denver Public Schools (DPS) moved to virtual programming. YOR in-school programming continued virtually and all Teaching Artists and Partner Artists were trained in effective strategies to maintain student engagement through on line teaching. In addition to in-school programming moving to virtual platforms, YOR's primary Out of School Time (OST) programs - Open Lab, Empowered and the Fellowship - transitioned to virtual platforms. Acknowledging the disproportionately negative impact the pandemic was having on communities of color, YOR felt it was imperative for the organization to ensure service continuity and to ensure teachers were trained in the most effective strategies for both virtual engagement and offering-emotional support in additional academic support.YOR increased its already-present emphasis on trauma-informed approaches both with its work with youth and its work with staff. Music has long been cited as an effective coping mechanism for BIPOC communities and YOR is working hard to encourage staff and participants to co-create with one another and to use this medium as a source of healing. In December 2019, YOR was selected as one of the Colorado Business Committee for the Arts' 2020 Business for the Arts Awards Honorees. As one of the only eight organizations selected statewide, honorees include organizations that are advancing the creative economy in unique ways.Further, also in 2019, YOR was selected to partner with APS on its Young of Color Collective Impact Program. Through this grant-funded initiative, YOR is offering its Social Problems and Creative Solutions course in one Aurora Public Schools high school, specifically targeting school-identified young men of color who are considered "high risk" for falling behind, failing or dropping out.During the 2019-2020 school year, YOR expanded programming into a DPS middle school. Currently reaching 160 students at one middle school, YOR aims to expand its reach into additional schools in the 2020-2021 year.YOR established two new focal points that are still in the pilot and research and development phases. These programs aim to further meet the needs to young people in new and innovative ways. 1) Youth Music Advisory Network: YOR is charged with the initial stage of developing a statewide youth music advisory network. The network will be developed and activated to empower youth statewide to guide music education to meet their interests and needs to maximize the impact of music education offerings. Program partners include Colorado Creative Industries and Take Note Colorado. 2)MIC Class: MIC Class is a training institute that YOR developed in partnership with Take Note Colorado to train Colorado musicians who are interested in further developing their skills so that they can lead classes and workshops in schools and youth facilities throughout the state. Now, Colorado's musicians who are interested in reach and teaching Colorado's young people are acquiring the tangible skills that will prepare them to share their gifts in schools and youth-serving facilities (libraries, youth centers, hospitals and treatment centers). Other training areas will include Musician Health & Community Safety, Trauma Support and Recovery, and Emerging Music Business.
