SWCI provides supports and training for local members of the disability and aging communities to live the lives they want in Southwest Colorado.
SWCI envisions a world where envisions a world where people with disabilities and those who are aging are respected included members of their communities, making their own choices, directing the supports and services they need to live well in the community, and giving back to the community through their strengths.
The Independent Living program is our principle service. As a certified Center for Independent Living, we provide a supports and services to help people become more independent and more included. We work together on the issues people bring us, from finding housing to making friends or starting a business. We provide assistance through information, referral, options counseling, independent living skills training, peer support, teaching people to advocate for themselves, and systems advocacy to break down barriers, and assistance with emancipation and deinstitutionalization.
Southwest Rides is our transportation service, providing free accessibledriver-assisted transportation for people with disabilities, those who are aging, and Veterans to medical appointments, the food bank, and other places. We provided nearly 3000 trips in La Plata County during FY 2019-20. As per our By-Laws, we don't charge our consumers, so we charge others - through Medicaid, contracts, donations, and grants.
The Low Vision program provides specialized independent living services for people aged 55 and older who are experiencing age-related vision loss. Services include peer support groups, mobility and home assessments, access to assistive technology, and education about eye disease and technology.
