Organizations Filed Purposes: To bring together pro-conservation local leaders in the Interior West - Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming to protect our air, water, public health and public lands.

To promote actions at the local, state and national level that protect our air, water, public health and public lands

Energy & ClimateIn 2019, Western Leaders Network (WLN) engaged 350-plus local officials and tribal elected leaders throughout the Interior West on the following issues: Building the organization's membership; preserving the BLM and EPA federal rules to reduce methane emissions, and advocating reforms to the federal oil and gas fiscal program and state-level rules in both Colorado and New Mexico to reduce oil and gas pollution. On the above issues WLN organized and submitted sign-on letters to state and federal agencies and officials, issued media statements and public comments, recruited leaders to write letters-to-the-editor and opinion editorials, partnered with experts and other organizations to host educational webinars for the network, and organized staff and WLN members to testify in Washington, DC.WLN also focused organization efforts on climate and energy, mainly reforming the U.S. federal oil and gas fiscal program. Updating these policies would ensure oil and gas companies pay a fair market price to develop nonrenewable resources, guarantee a fair taxpayer return and protect communities and our climate from industry inpacts.

Mining Law ReformWLN also focused on 1872 Mining Law Reform, which was an effort to engage local and tribal elected officials with federal decision-makers on the need to reform outdated legislation to hold hard rock companies accountable for pollution, reclaim abandoned mines and establish a cleanup fund to protect communities and local economies from the impact of mine waste.

Land and Water ConservationWLN dedicated efforts in 2019 to protect public lands, which are important wildlife habitat and enchance western economies and quality of life through the outdoor recreation industry. WLN advocated for Congress to grant full and permanent funding to the Land and Water Conservation Fund, a program established in 1964 to conserve natural areas, water resources and cultural heritage. In addition WLN is working to preserve and protect the Greater Sage-grouse and sagebrush habitat.WLN launched Western Leaders Voices, an initiative to amplify network members' voices on conservation issues through the media. WLN assists western leaders with writing op-eds on current conservation topices relevant to their communities and helps identify a media outlet for publication. Over the past year, WLN helped local and tribal officials in Arizona, Wyoming, New Mexico and Colorado publish opinion editorials on topics including sage grouse and federal plans to conserve its habitat. Staff organized two major organization building trips, one in Montana and Wyoming, and another in New Mexico to build relationships with new local and tribal elected officials and recruit them to the organization. WLN also welcomed a new Indian Country Organizer responsible for recruiting, organizing and cultivating relationships with western tribal leaders.
