PARADOX SPORTS REVOLUTIONIZES LIVES THROUGH ADAPTIVE CLIMBING OPPORTUNITIES THAT DEFY CONVENTION.
Paradox Sports completed its third year of The Adaptive Climbing Initiative in partnership with The North Face. The goal of the program is to raise awareness about the importance of making climbing accessible and inspire climbing gyms to be trained in Paradox Sports adaptive climbing techniques. Through the Adaptive Climbing Initiative, more than 250 people were trained at the course and each now has the skills needed to facilitate adaptive climbing activities. More than 125 people with disabilities had the chance to try climbing for the first time.Sixteen climbing gyms received adaptive climbing equipment and technical training in 2019, and each is now more prepared to serve climbers with disabilities. Climbing gyms trained included facilities in major metropolitan areas including Denver, Bentonville, Richmond, San Francisco, Louisville and Fairfield.Paradox Sports also worked in collaboration with Disabled Sports USA to offer adaptive climbing programs exclusive to disabled veterans and their families. The organizations partnered with the VA hospitals to train therapists and staff to facilitate climbing activities for injured veterans. The organization delivered on its five national trips, serving a wide range of people with physical disabilities. Programs occurred in Yosemite (CA), Shelf Road (CO), Shawangunks (NY), North Conway (NH), and Ouray (CO). Paradox Sports also partnered with No Barriers to provide a Teton climbing experience for 10 disabled veterans. Paradox Sports delivered its local programs in the Denver/Boulder metropolitan area, serving over 150 people on indoor and outdoor adaptive climbing programs. Overall impact included over 1,570 experiences delivered, serving a wide range of individuals with neurological disorders (27%), amputation/limb differences (24%), spinal cord injuries (17%), visual impairment (12%), PTSD (10%), traumatic brain injury (9%), and other disabilities (1%). Paradox Sports also worked in collaboration with Disabled Sports USA to offer adaptive climbing programs exclusive to disabled veterans and their families. The organizations partnered with the VA hospitals in San Antonio, Oklahoma City, and Minneapolis to train therapists and staff to facilitate climbing activities for injured veterans.The organization continued its focus on making U.S. National Parks more accessible and relaunched its Grand Teton National Park program after a three-year hiatus. Paradox partnered with No Barriers to provide a Teton climbing experience for 12 disabled veterans. The organization also provided a similar experience at Yosemite National Park over the anniversary of September 11th.Through the Adaptive Climbing Initiative, more than 250 people were trained at the course and each now has the skills needed to facilitate adaptive climbing activities. More than 125 people with disabilities had the chance to try climbing for the first time.Paradox Sports' ambassadors Trevor Smith (silver), Aika Yoshida (gold) and Maureen Beck (gold) won medals at the Adaptive World Climbing Championships. Paradox Sports ambassadors Esha Mehta, Jessica Sporte, and James Scheri also competed in the event after all qualifying at the Adaptive Climbing National Championship.
