Discos Dogs (4 teams): This program provides service dogs and skilled-companion dogs for individuals age 5 and up with autism-related differences or developmentaldisabilities. Carefully managing the genetics, temperament, health care, and early training and socialization of the service dog candidates will enable FSD to graduate more successful service dogs in a timelier manner. In 2020 FSD achieved an initial 40% placement rate for puppies in the training program, a dramatic increase over the 9% placement rate seen with shelter and rescue dogs, and a confirmation that FSD will be able to serve significantly more clients with the new model.Additionally, FSD provided lifetime support, including follow-up training and recertification, to 195 existing client-dog teams in 2020. A recent survey of 2019 FSD graduates who have had their service dogs for one full year shows that 83% of respondents experienced an increase in their overall quality of life, including social, physical, and emotional functioning.During 2020, FSD volunteers remained committed to the mission despite the pandemic and logged 67,152 hours by fostering 109 puppies and assisting with dog care, dog training, dog socialization, public education, administration, event support, and outreach.
Public education and outreach: FSD provides a variety of educational programs, including working with youths with developmental disabilities or neurodiversity in schools, community programs, and other settings, and educating corporate and community-based groups on the FSD mission and impact.
