Organizations Filed Purposes:
The Highpointers Foundation provides a forum for education about the 50 state highpoints, aids in the conservation of highpoints and their environs, maintains positive relationships with owners of highpoints on public and private property, assists in the care and maintenance of highpoints, and supports public and private efforts to maintain the integrity of and safe access to state highpoints.
To aid in the preservation and conservation of the 50 state highpoints and to maintain safe access for the public to these highpoints.
Sassafras Mountain, South Carolina: these funds were donated to The Conservation Fund which financed the construction of a trail from Headwaters State Forest in North Carolina to the NC/SC state line, where it connects with a spur of the Foothills trail that leads to the summit of Sassafras Mountain, the SC state highpoint. This trail, largely following an abandoned logging road, is the first hiking access to Sassafras Mountain from the North Carolina side of the state line, and now provides visitors an option to hike the highpoint rather than drive up.
Mount Elbert, Colorado: This money was donated to the U. S. Forest Service in San Isabel National Forest to improve trail access to Mount Elbert, the Colorado state highpoint. The money was largely used to purchase about 70 gabions, which are large sturdy wire cages capable of holding several hundred pounds of rock each, for soil stability purposes. These gabions were emplaced along the South Elbert Trail to stabilize the trail and control erosion.
Mount Frissell south slope, Connecticut: This money was used to purchase a kiosk and signage. It was intended to erect the kiosk at the trailhead at the MA/CT state line. Unfortunately the pandemic interfered with these plans to erect the kiosk. Plans are now to install the kiosk by Summer 2021.
