Believing that when one person serves the whole family serves, Project Sanctuary takes a human-centered, solution-based approach to helping military families heal and move forward in life. Through innovative long-term programming focused on connectedness, we restore hope and empower families to recover and thrive.
Project Sanctuary believes that everyone has the right and the ability to heal. We assist military service members by reconnecting the family unit through a holistic approach. Our program heals the traumatic effects of military service, treating all members of the family at their level of need and enabling the service members to reintegrate into their families and communities in a healthy and sustainable manner. Project Sanctuarys work preserves the family unit, strengthening the community, the military, and the country.
Therapeutic Retreat Program:Project Sanctuarys therapeutic retreats offer military families a way to recover, reconnect and build their capacity to support one another through recreation therapy and classes focused on communication skills and financial literacy. This results-driven program is run by professional, clinically-qualified staff. Six-day retreats include Healthy Marriage and Post Traumatic Stress workshops, financial sustainability classes, one-on-one time with a financial planner, counselors, and age-appropriate youth activities that mirror the adults curriculum. In FY20, 178 military families comprised of more than 690 people were supported at 27 therapeutic retreats. Project Sanctuary was one of only a few veteran-serving organizations that quickly restarted in-persons services by developing a "Safer at Retreats" model, effectively implemented at our first retreat with only a 6 week suspension of services after the pandemic started closing down communities.
Family Support Program:Project Sanctuarys Family Support program provides comprehensive support services and serves any military family that reaches out for help. Program support includes: case management by a licensed social worker, referrals for mental health treatment, employment assistance, assistance with housing solutions, ongoing financial education, guidance navigating VA and DoD benefits, crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and more. In FY20, 117 families received family support and emergency financial assistance, while an additional 5,015 received offers of education, support, and assistance in monthly communications. Additionally, 63 individuals (including 30 couples) participated in Destination Resource Weekends during the COVID pandemic where 19 veteran serving organizational partners joined Project Sanctuary to provide resources after life goal setting exercises.
