Aspen Prep Academy ("APA") is an independent junior kindergarten through eighth grade school specializing in providing personalized education based on students' abilities and performance levels, neurological learning strengths, as well as their personal interests. APA's mission is to cultivate excellence in academic rigor, character and leadership development, and community strength and service. APA serves approximately 400 students in the Denver Metropolitan Area.Within 12 hours of Governor Jared Polis' request that schools across Colorado close their campuses in March 2020, Aspen Academy's team pivoted its entire learning platform to a digital model, and by the next school day (Monday), students were fully engaged in virtual classes. Numerous other schools not only closed their buildings, but effectively shut down teaching and learning for three months. Across the country, on average, students returned to schools in the fall with roughly 70% learning gains in reading relative to a typical year and less than 50% in math (Source: NWEA). Aspen Academy students returned with 73% having exceeded reading (communications and literacy) growth and 80% exceeded math growth. Overall, 94% of Aspen Academy students met or exceeded their grade level learning growth goals. The expenses associated with this shift in digital learning platforms and technology as well as the initial stages of preparing our building and campus to ensure the health and safety of our staff and students per CDC guidelines totaled $91,960.32. Substantial expense and capital cash outlays are anticipated for 2020-2021 school year in order for the school to be fully compliant with CDC and other regulatory requirements due to COVID-19.
