Organizations Filed Purposes: To provide regular symphony concerts, childrens' concerts and special event musical concerts for the general public, and youth education and outreach.

The Arapahoe Philharmonic's mission is to engage, enrich, and inspire our community through musical performance, education, and outreach.

The Arapahoe Philharmonic provides regular symphony concerts, children and family concerts, special event concerts for the general public, youth education programs, and community outreach programs. The March and the May concerts had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Arapahoe Philharmonic provides in school coaching, high school play-in, honor orchestra coaching, a children's discovery concert, and a family concert. Our conductor goes into school orchestra and band programs to work on full ensemble musicianship and style, help prepare students for festival judging, and offer them the opportunity to work with a professional conductor. He is also available to work with orchestra and band directors on conducting technique and musicianship. AP musicians support school music programs by working with small groups or sections, offering individualized attention that focuses on instrument-specific technique, intonation, musical style and other aspects of performance that are difficult for directors to address in a large group setting. We also offer our composer-in-residence as a coach to area high schools that have students interested in composition.Area high school students and adult avocational players participate in an afternoon of rehearsal and sectionals, playing side-by-side with members of the Arapahoe Philharmonic in every section. The day culminates with a free performance for families and the community. AP coaches help prepare students to audition for honor orchestras and/or coach sectionals with the students in preparation for their performances. We currently work with the Continental League, Aurora Public Schools, and Cherry Creek School District Middle Schools Honor Orchestras, and have been approached about providing coaches for Douglas County Middle School Honor Orchestra sectionals.Hundreds of elementary school students and teachers take a musical field trip to our venue for an entertaining music program designed just for them. Curriculum meeting state education standards is provided to teachers to help prepare their students for the concert. Our musicians walk around the venue prior to the performance to demonstrate their instruments. The children can learn to conduct and try playing some orchestral instruments for themselves.Held immediately prior to each orchestral concert, the Children's Corner brings to life the music children will hear in performance. Past Children's Corners have featured cartoons, living composers, Nutcracker ballerinas in costume, information on what to listen for during specific works, and unusual instruments. Our music director, guest artists, and special guests present informative pre-concert talks in the hall prior to each performance offering an in-depth look at the lives and works of the composers the orchestra will be performing. Our music director also records short videos talking about the concert programs, with musical samples, that are shared through our website, via email, and on our social media pages to inform potential attendees of what they will experience at the performance. During concerts, videos of interviews/introductions by composers offer additional insight into the music we are performing. In November 2019, we collaborated with the Colorado Ballet Academy to include original choreography by Academy students for Copland's Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo. Seven Academy students danced the piece during the performance and participated in our Children's Corner that evening. This past February 2020, we collaborated with students from Denver School of the Arts' jazz program for our concert "The Jazz Age." Students performed with the orchestra in works by William Grant Still, Duke Ellington and George Gershwin, and were featured by themselves in a small jazz combo during the concert. We provided a Family Concert to engage with multiple generations and provide an entertaining, casual performance experience designed for the whole family to enjoy together.

We host three collegiate-level competitions: the T. Gordon Parks Concerto Competition and the Vincent C. LaGuardia, Jr. Conducting and Composition Competitions, which alternate annually. The concerto competition winner performs a solo work with the orchestra. The conducting competition winner directs the orchestra in a composition on a masterworks concert. The composition competition winner is named composer-in-residence for two seasons, has his/her winning composition performed, and is commissioned to write at least one new piece for the orchestra during the residency.
