Organizations Filed Purposes:
Inspiring actions that protect birds, other wildlife, and their habitats through education, conservation, and research.
Environmental Education Program:Denver Audubon provided hands-on, science-based programs to over 1,300 Pre-K to high school students, including Title I schools, in fiscal 2019-2020. Through March, programs were offered in the classroom, on school grounds/neighborhood parks, and at the Audubon Center at Chatfield State Park. For seven years, Denver Audubon has offered a year-long "Healthy Waters, Healthy Birds" program for the fifth grade students at East Elementary and the fourth grade students at Roxborough Intermediate. Denver Audubon also began new conservation programs with middle and high school students. The Audubon Nature Center was open to the public for family and adult programs, summer camps, and a variety of public events. We had over 2,000 visitors and program participants of all ages at the Audubon Center at Chatfield State Park during fiscal year 2019-2020. NOTE: From March to June 2020, due to COVID, the staff worked on virtual programs for the schools and the public, including a live feed of the bird banding.
Member Services:Over 800 people attended over 75 field trips and classes throughout the Denver metro region (numbers are lower to previous years dues to COVID). Over 4,700 supporters receive information about programs through bi-weekly email, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram notices. Over 75 members attended our annual Fall Members Gathering in 2019. Our Communications & Marketing Coordinator develops new communications to our members to tell our program stories, and created our first printed annual report for 2018-19. NOTE: In April 2020 we debuted a new website, which includes a blog. We discontinued the Warbler and direct our supporters to the new website.
Other Projects and Partnerships:1. Conservation program: In January 2020, one staff member became our first Conservation Programs Coordinator. She works with Denver Audubons Conservation Committee to follow legislative activities and watch for projects or proposals that might adversely affect bird populations, other wildlife, and habitats in the Denver metro region. Committee members participate in land-use stakeholder meetings and review construction plans and conservation alternatives. The Conservation Coordinator is also working with all staff to ensure conservation weaves through all of our programs. Current activities include working with local communities to encourage creating bird-friendly yards and encouraging hunters to use non-lead ammunition through a new brochure we created. The Committee hosts an annual Getting Green Laws legislative forum.2. Research program: Denver Audubons more formal research efforts are supported by the Lois Webster Fund (LWF). The LWF helps sponsor non-game wildlife research and educational projects. Since 1995, has awarded 53 grants totaling over $108,463. The 2020 Projects are: Black Swift Movement Ecology Wild Bee Recovery Following A Catastrophic Flood Bald Eagle Nesting Studies3. Other notable programs include: Audubon Master Birder program, monthly programs and events for all ages at the Audubon Center at Chatfield State Park, adult classes such as Beginning Birdwatching, Birding Insights, Naturalist Training, and the Bluebird Project. We also partner with the Childrens Hospital South Campus in Highlands Ranch where we installed bird feeders. Our volunteers have binoculars to show young patients and their parents our local birds. NOTE: Beginning in March, some programs were cancelled, while others were converted to virtual programs. The success of these activities is related to Denver Audubons large and successful volunteer program. In fiscal 2019/20, over 200 individual volunteers, including corporate groups, contributed over 6,000 hours of their time to Denver Audubon!
