Organizations Filed Purposes:
Historic Routt Countys mission is to preserve and to promote the historic character of Routt County communities and rural areas through the built environment. Historic Routt County connects yesterdays places with tomorrow.
-Preservation Projects: This is the cornerstone of our work. We facilitate collaborative projects to preserve the built environment and to interpret and promote our community's historic resources. Historic Routt County assists willing property owners to rehabilitate, stabilize, or restore their historic properties by offering technical assistance, by writing and managing grants, and by providing other services as needed for each individual project. For example, in 2018 we completed the multi-year, multi-phase rehabilitation of the historic Crossans Market in Yampa, CO. The market building, which had been used as storage from 1964 2006 and was severely deteriorated, is now Yampas Town Hall and a regional visitors center with historical exhibits. In January 2020, the project received the Governors Award for Historic Preservation, the most prestigious preservation award in the state. In 2019 and 2020, Historic Routt County has worked to preserve St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Steamboat Springs, as well as the Foidel Canyon School House in rural Routt County. In 2019 HRC launched a Stewardship Program to maintain the publicly-owned historic resources our organization has helped preserve over the past 20 years. -Historic Designation and Documentation: Historic Routt County partners with willing property owners to document or nominate historic properties to the Steamboat Springs, Routt County, Colorado State and/or National Registers of Historic Properties. This is Historic Routt County's most far-reaching and successful program. Since 1999, HRC has helped over one hundred individual property owners successfully list their property on a historic register. -Outreach and Education: HRC presents and sponsors programs, workshops, forums and tours about Routt County historic and cultural resources and facilitates interpretation of historic sites with area museums. We partner with local and regional groups to provide resources and guidance for historic preservation issues and heritage tourism initiatives. HRC writes a regular column for the local press that features photographs and stories about the area's historic buildings and cultural landscapes. We maintain a website rich with history of local buildings and with updates on local preservation activities and events.
