Organizations Filed Purposes: APCCMPD WAS CREATED TO FACILITATE EXCELLENCE IN CLINICAL AND RESEARCH TRAINING OF PULMONARY,CRITICAL CARE AND PULMONARY AND CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE. IT PROVIDES A VEHICLE FOR COMMUNICATION AMONG ALL TRAINING PROGRAM DIRECTORS, FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS, AND FACULTY AND VARIOUS ORGANIZATIONS WHICH DEAL WITH TRAINING OF PULMONOLOGISTS AND CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE SPECIALISTS. IT MONITORS AND RESPONDS TO DEVELOPMENTS IN TRAINING, ACCREDITATION, CREDENTIALING,MANPOWER, FINANCING, AND OTHER ISSUES AFFECTING PROGRAMS IN PULMONARY AND/OR CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE. THE APCCMPD PROVIDES EDUCATION AND RESOURCES TO SUPPORT THE CAREER DEVELOPMENT OF MEDICAL EDUCATORS IN PULMONARY AND CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE.

THE ASSOCIATION OF PULMONARY AND CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE PROGRAM DIRECTORS (APCCMPD) WAS CREATED TO FACILITATE EXCELLENCE IN CLINICAL AND RESEARCH TRAINING IN PULMONARY AND CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE.

APCCMPD DEVELOPS AND ADMINISTERS THE PULMONARY AND CRITICAL CARE IN-SERVICE EXAMINATION. THE IN-SERVICE EXAM WAS INITIATED IN MAY OF 2007 AND IS AVAILABLE TO INCOMING, 1ST, 2ND, AND 3RD YEAR PULMONARY AND/OR CRITICAL CARE FELLOWS IN-TRAINING. THE EXAM ASSISTS PULMONARY AND CRITICAL CARE FELLOWS IN-TRAINING AND THEIR TRAINING PROGRAM DIRECTORS TO IDENTIFY AREAS WHERE INDIVIDUAL KNOWLEDGE GAPS EXIST, AND TO ASSESS READINESS FOR THE PULMONARY AND CRITICAL CARE MEDICAL LICENSING BOARD EXAMINATION. IT ALSO BENCHMARKS KNOWLEDGE UPTAKE AGAINST OTHER TRAINING PROGRAMS.EACH YEAR AN IN-SERVICE EXAM WRITING COMMITTEE, COMPRISED OF REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF CHEST PHYSICIANS, THE AMERICAN THORACIC SOCIETY, AND THE APCCMPD, CONVENE TO REVIEW THE SCIENTIFIC ACCEPTABILITY AND RELEVANCE OF THE EXAM QUESTIONS. THE EXAM IS ADMINISTERED ON-LINE EACH SPRING AND PROCTORED BY THE INDIVIDUAL TRAINING CENTERS.

EVERY SPRING, APCCMPD HOLDS THE ANNUAL SPRING CONFERENCE FOR PULMONARY AND/OR CRITICAL CARE TRAINING PROGRAM DIRECTORS. TRAINING PROGRAM DIRECTORS, ASSOCIATE PROGRAM DIRECTORS, AND PROGRAM COORDINATORS ARE INVITED TO ATTEND THIS 1.5 DAY EDUCATIONAL EVENT WHERE THEY LEARN ABOUT NEW ACCREDITATION COUNCIL FOR GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION (ACGME) REQUIREMENTS FOR PULMONARY, CRITICAL CARE AND SLEEPMEDICINE TRAINING PROGRAMS; INNOVATIVE METHODS OF TEACHING MEDICAL EDUCATION; TOOLS AND SERVICES TO FACILITATE TRAINING PROGRAMS; AND LEGAL ISSUES RELATED TO MEDICAL TRAINING, AMONG OTHER TOPICS.

THE APCCMPD OFFERS TWO ANNUAL ABSTRACT AWARDS:1. APCCMPD RESEARCH IN MEDICAL EDUCATION AWARD- RECOGNIZES PULMONARY AND CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE TRAINING PROGRAM DIRECTORS, ASSOCIATE PROGRAM DIRECTORS, KEY CLINICAL FACULTY OR FELLOWS-IN-TRAINING FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS AND COMMITMENT TO MEDICAL EDUCATION RESEARCH.2. DARLENE BUCZAK AWARD FOR EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE THE DARLENE BUCZAK AWARD FOR EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE RECOGNIZES PULMONARY AND CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE TRAINING PROGRAM DIRECTORS FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS AND COMMITMENT TO MEDICAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING.TO BE ELIGIBLE TO COMPETE, APPLICANTS MUST SUBMIT AN ABSTRACT DESCRIBING ASUCCESSFUL INNOVATIVE EDUCATIONAL METHOD THEY HAVE APPLIED TO THEIR TRAININGPROGRAMS. THE BOARD OF APCCMPD REVIEWS THE APPLICATIONS AND SELECTS ONE RECIPIENTTO RECEIVE A $500 STIPEND AND COMPLIMENTARY REGISTRATION AND TRAVEL (HOTEL AND AIRFARE) TO THE ANNUAL SPRING TRAINING PROGRAM DIRECTORS CONFERENCE WHERE THERECIPIENT PRESENTS HIS OR HER INNOVATIVE EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING APPROACH.3. THE APCCMPD HONORS AN EXEMPLARY CLINICIAN EDUCATOR THROUGH ITS OUTSTANDINGEDUCATOR AWARD AND EMERGING EDUCATOR AWARD. PCCM, CCM, AND PULMONARYFELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS MAY NOMINATE AN EDUCATOR WITHIN THE P/CCM FIELD FOR THESEPRESTIGIOUS AWARDS.4. THE APCCMPD PROVIDES AN EDUCATION RESEARCH AWARD (AERA), A $25,000 GRANT, THAT ISGIVEN OUT EVERY OTHER YEAR TO FUND PROJECTS THAT FURTHER THE FIELD OF PULMONARYAND CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE FELLOW TRAINING.
