Organizations Filed Purposes:
Blacks In Green (BIG) is an educator which serves as a bridge and catalyst among communities and their stakeholders in the design and development of green, self-sustaining, mixed-income, walkable-villages in communities owned and populated by African Americans.
BIG Botanic Gardens & Farms 1.) Opened the Green Living Room - A community hub for educating residents of West Woodlawn about the conservation lifestyle. 2.) Green Deal Emporium and Apothecary - Retail operation that includes selling products from gardens. 3.) Hosted 2000 guests at events and drop in visits to the Green Living Room. 4.) Operated five gardens in West Woodlawn. a.) Sustainability Teaching Garden - Open to the public and a gateway for tourism in ecology, heritage and art. b.) Stone Garden - Garden to demonstrate how backyard gardens benefit renters in apartment buildings. c.) Orchard of the Ancestors - Fruit and nut tree orchard that provides free programing space for community organizations. d.) Mamie Till-Mobley Forgiveness Garden - Community designed, installed and managed garden that encourages neighbors to reflect on forgiveness. e.) Senior Victory Garden - Program to coach seniors from the Burnham Senior Homes in growing an annual vegetable garden. 5.) Hosted composting classes.
BIG Clean Power 1.) ComEd Contract - Developed a novel outreach pilot project that included engaging residents of West Woodlawn at the Green Living Room and through the Street Operating System (SOS) team to increase awareness, engagement, and behavior change in the ComEd(R) Energy Efficiency Program (EEP) in low-income communities. 2.) Trained six recruits in solar panel implementation. 3.) Produced 73 community events on clean energy. 4.) Convened 78 community organizations for clean energy education. 5.) Hosted events educating about net zero energy housing. 6.) Sustainable Southside - Project to map the spectrum of schools, churches and industry that will serve as the foundation of the path to clean energy full employment.
BIG Urban Policy and Planning 1.) Camiros consulting contract - 18 month community-driven commercial corridor development project in Grand Rapids, MI. 2.) Published "Red Map" to illustrate turnover of property in West Woodlawn.
