CHICAGO COLLECTIONS IS A CONSORTIUM OF LIBRARIES, MUSEUMS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS WITH ARCHIVES THAT COLLABORATE TO PRESERVE AND SHARE THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF THE CHICAGO REGION.
CCC ASPIRES TO INCREASE PUBLIC AND SCHOLARLY INTEREST IN THE STUDY OF THE CHICAGO REGION'S RICH HISTORY AND CULTURE. IT IS COMMITTED TO UNITING THE RESOURCES OF OUR MEMBER INSTITUTIONS TO OFFER OPEN ACCESS, LEARNING EXPERIENCES, AND RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC, EDUCATORS AND SCHOLARS. PRIMARY ACTIVITIES CHICAGO COLLECTIONS IS A CONSORTIUM OF LIBRARIES, MUSEUMS, AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS WITH ARCHIVES THAT COLLABORATE TO PRESERVE AND SHARE THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF THE CHICAGO REGION. CHICAGO COLLECTIONS REMAINS COMMITTED TO UNIFYING THE RESOURCES OF MEMBER INSTITUTIONS IN ORDER TO PROVIDE OPEN ACCESS, LEARNING EXPERIENCES, AND RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC, EDUCATORS, AND SCHOLARS. PROGRAMS AND OUTREACH THE PORTAL, KNOWN AS EXPLORE CHICAGO COLLECTIONS (HTTP://EXPLORE.CHICAGOCOLLECTIONS.ORG/), IS THE ORGANIZATION'S FIRST MAJOR INITIATIVE THAT WAS MADE PUBLIC IN OCTOBER 2015. THE PORTAL SERVES AS A FREE, CENTRALIZED, WEB-BASED SEARCH ENGINE AND RECORD-FINDING TOOL THAT ALLOWS RESEARCHERS, TEACHERS, STUDENTS, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC TO LOCATE OR ACCESS OVER 100,000 MAPS, PHOTOS, LETTERS, AND OTHER ARCHIVAL MATERIALS HELD AT CCC'S MEMBER INSTITUTIONS. AT THIS TIME, CHICAGO COLLECTIONS HAS 51 UNIQUE MEMBERS WITH DIVERSE ARCHIVAL COLLECTIONS. EIGHT FREE PUBLIC PROGRAMS, "UNIQUE ARCHIVAL RESOURCES FOR GENEALOGY RESEARCH PANEL DISCUSSION," "BOOKS THAT BUILT CHICAGO: CHICAGO'S ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY IN PRINT," "SHARED JOURNEYS IN THE URBAN WILDS DISCUSSION WITH GAVIN VAN HORN,- AND VIRTUAL PROGRAMS INCLUDED "THE WORLD OF JULIETTE KINZIE: CHICAGO BEFORE THE FIRE," "LAUNCH OF CONVERSATIONS WITH CHICAGO COLLECTIONS," "TROUBLEMAKERS: CHICAGO FREEDOM STRUGGLES THROUGH THE LENS OF ART SHAY- AND "FORGOTTEN FEMINIST: SOPHONISBA BRECKINRIDGE AND WOMEN'S ACTIVISM IN CHICAGO" WERE OFFERED VIRTUALLY AT MEMBER INSTITUTIONS FURTHERING THE PROMOTION OF CHICAGO'S RICH HISTORY ON DIVERSE HISTORICAL TOPICS. THE JOINT PROGRAMMING PARTNERSHIP WITH THE BLACK METROPOLIS RESEARCH CONSORTIUM CONTINUED WITH "RECOVERING THE LOST SOUTH SIDE; AUTHORS LEE BEY AND DON HAYNER IN CONVERSATION." CHICAGO AUTHORS LEE BEY AND DON HAYNER PRESENTED THEIR RECENT BOOKS HIGHLIGHTING THE OVERLOOKED ARCHITECTURE AND HISTORY OF CHICAGO'S SOUTH SIDE AND DON HAYNER'S BOOK ON THE LIFE OF JESSE BINGA, THE FIRST BLACK BANKER IN CHICAGO. IN THEIR DISCUSSION, BEY AND HAYNER HIGHLIGHTED THE HISTORICAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DECADES OF DISINVESTMENT IN THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE SOUTH SIDE AND THE TRAGIC COLLAPSE OF BINGA'S CAREER. THREE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS WERE PROVIDED DURING THE YEAR TO CCC MEMBERS WHICH INCLUDED CREATING DIGITAL EXHIBITS, METADATA HOPPER WORKSHOPS (STEPS TO UPLOAD INFORMATION TO EXPLORE CHICAGO COLLECTIONS) AND TRAIN THE TRAINERS THAT TRAINED MEMBERS OF DISCOVERY SYSTEMS COMMITTEE TO TEACH METADATA HOPPER WORKSHOPS. THESE PROGRAMS WERE WELL-RECEIVED AND SUPPORTED CCC'S EFFORTS OF PROMOTING ACCESSIBILITY TO ARCHIVAL COLLECTIONS. PARTNERSHIPS THE CHICAGO COLLECTIONS CONSORTIUM IS PROUD TO CONTINUE ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CHICAGO CULTURAL ALLIANCE (CCA) ALLOWING TO AMPLIFY FIRST-VOICE IMMIGRATION AND MIGRATION EXPERIENCES IN CHICAGO WITH THE NEW DIGITAL ARCHIVE PROJECT "STORIES OF IMMIGRATION: CHICAGO". THE PROJECT CONTINUES TO HIGHLIGHT COLLECTIONS OF DIVERSE COMMUNITIES AROUND CHICAGO AND CONNECT THEM TO THE CURRENT DAY DISCUSSIONS OF IMMIGRATION AND MIGRATION IN THE US. CCC ALSO PARTNERED WITH CHICAGO AREA ARCHIVISTS (GENEALOGY WORKSHOP AT HAROLD WASHINGTON LIBRARY CENTER), CHICAGO RESEARCH SUMMIT, CAXTON CLUB AND CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE BIENNIAL. CCC IS PROUD TO PARTICIPATE IN THE NATIONAL FINDING AID NETWORK PROJECT, WHOSE EFFORTS ARE FOCUSED TOWARD ESTABLISHING A FINDING AID NETWORK. UNIQUE PARTNERSHIPS WITH THESE ORGANIZATIONS HAVE DEMONSTRATED THAT, BY WORKING TOGETHER GREATER, IMPACT AND SUCCESSFUL RESULTS ARE POSSIBLE. MEMBERSHIP THE ADDITION OF 4 NEW MEMBERS (THE UNION LEAGUE CLUB OF CHICAGO, MEDIA BURN ARCHIVE, THE GROVE NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK AND THE CHICAGO CUBS TO THE CCC IS AN EXAMPLE OF THE VARIETY OF ORGANIZATIONS BOUND TOGETHER FOR THE PROMOTION OF AND SHARING OF CHICAGO'S HISTORY AND CULTURE. ORGANIZATIONAL AWARENESS CCC WAS NOTED IN THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT CHICAGO SPRING 2019 ALUMNI PUBLICATION WHICH SPOTLIGHTED UIC AND CCC'S PARTNERSHIP. ADDITIONALLY, CCC WAS REPRESENTED AT PROMOTIONAL EVENTS AND CONFERENCES. CCC'S EFFORTS IN GROWING AUDIENCES THROUGH ITS SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS CONTINUED. FUNDRAISING EFFORTS THE GENEROUS FUNDING FROM, ILLINOIS HUMANITIES, ILLINOIS ARTS COUNCIL AGENCY, GAYLORD AND DOROTHY DONNELLEY FOUNDATION, ILLINOIS AND TERRA FOUNDATION PROVIDED IMPORTANT RELIEF SUPPORT DURING THE ONSET OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. THIS SUPPORT HAS ALLOWED CHICAGO COLLECTIONS TO CONTINUE ITS WORK OF PROVIDING FREE AND OPEN ACCESS TO MEMBER ARCHIVAL COLLECTIONS WHILE PROMOTING THESE MATERIALS THROUGH NEW FREE VIRTUAL PUBLIC PROGRAMS. OPERATIONAL SUPPORT FROM THE GAYLORD AND DOROTHY DONNELLEY FOUNDATION AND THE MACARTHUR DRIEHAUS GRANT FUND CONTINUES TO HAVE A PIVOTAL IMPACT ON CHICAGO COLLECTIONS CONSORTIUM (CCC) PROGRAMMING EFFORTS. DIGITAL EXHIBITIONS DRAWING FROM MEMBER COLLECTIONS WERE CREATED AND INCLUDED: "RACE RIOTS AND CHICAGO IN 1919- AND "WILD IN THE CITY: CHICAGO LAND'S URBAN ECOLOGY." MEMBER COLLECTIONS WERE SHARED ON THESE TOPIC AND NEW AUDIENCES WERE REACHED LOCALLY, NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY WITH A CLICK TO THE DIGITAL EXHIBIT WEBSITE. INTERNS 2 UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS AND 1 GRADUATE STUDENT FROM MEMBER INSTITUTIONS (SAIC, DEPAUL UNIVERSITY) SUPPORTED THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WITH OUTREACH AND PROGRAM PROMOTIONS.
