Organizations Filed Purposes: CRLN BUILDS PARTNERSHIPS AMONG SOCIAL MOVEMENTS AND ORGANIZED COMMUNITIES WITHIN AND BETWEEN THE U.S. AND LATIN AMERICA. CRLN BUILDS PARTNERSHIPS AMONG SOCIAL MOVEMENTS AND ORGANIZED COMMUNITIES WITHIN AND BETWEEN THE U.S. AND LATIN AMERICA.

IN 2015, CRLN ORGANIZED AND LED DELEGATIONS TO EL SALVADOR AND COLOMBIA, AND PLANNED SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS IN CHICAGO AND THE MIDWEST FOR SPEAKERS FROM GUATEMALA, HONDURAS AND COLOMBIA TO EXPLORE THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTH EFFECTS OF METALLIC MINING ON RURAL COMMUNITIES IN CENTRAL AMERICA, TO WITNESS THE ORGANIZATION OF SALVADORAN COMMUNITIES FOR THE PURPOSE OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION, TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY EFFORTS TO PROVIDE HEALTHCARE FOR RURAL HONDURANS, TO LEARN ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF THE U.S.-COLOMBIA FREE TRADE AGREEMENT ON AFRO-COLOMBIAN COMMUNITIES IN AND AROUND BUENAVENTURA, TO HEAR ABOUT THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF COLOMBIA'S PROGRAMS TO PREVENT VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN, AND TO HEAR ABOUT THE PROGRESS OF AND DIFFICULTIES FACING THE COLOMBIA PEACE PROCESS. CRLN ALSO ENGAGED IN EXPLAINING TO ITS MEMBERSHIP AND THE WIDER COMMUNITY THE LINKS BETWEEN U.S. POLICY IN CENTRAL AMERICA--PARTICULARLY MILITARY AID AND FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS-- SOCIAL CONDITIONS AND HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN LATIN AMERICA, AND THE RISE IN IMMIGRATION TO THE U.S. FROM CENTRAL AMERICA. CRLN OPPOSED THE DETENTION AND DEPORTATION OF UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS, WHO HAVE FLED DESPERATE SITUATIONS IN THEIR HOME COUNTRIES, AND ORGANIZED ITS IMMIGRANT WELCOMING CONGREGATIONS TO HOST "KNOW YOUR RIGHTS" WORKSHOPS FOR IMMIGRANTS; ORGANIZED CONGREGATIONS TO WRITE LETTERS AND SIGN PETITIONS IN SUPPORT OF UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS SLATED FOR DEPORTATION TO CONVINCE THE IMMIGRATIONS AND CUSTOMS ENFORCEMENT (ICE) REGIONAL OFFICE TO GRANT PROSECUTORIAL DISCRETION, AND CHALLENGED ICE'S USE OF RAIDS AND DECEPTIVE PRACTICES TO DETAIN PEOPLE.
