Organizations Filed Purposes:
Provide a forum for the engine and truck manufacturing industries to share information on issues that impact their products, foster the development of efficient engine power for an environmentally conscious world, and improve the safety and performance of heavy duty commercial vehicles.
EMA represents and advocates for the interest of truck and engine manufacturers and serves as the voice of its member companies on domestic and international public policy, legislative and regulatory issues. EMA works with regulatory agencies, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), the California Air Resources Board, international regulatory agencies, and state governments to develop and implement cost-effective and technologically feasible emission, fuel quality, safety, and fuel efficiency regulations. EMA also funds outside science-based research to provide data in support of the above activities. In furtherance of this work, EMA worked extensively with government regulators over the course of 2020 on developing and implementing (i)rules under the Federal Clean Air Act and the Energy Independence and Security Act focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving fuel efficiency; (ii) rules under the Federal Clean Air Act and the California Clean Air Act implementing further mobile source emission control regulations; and (iii) various NHTSA rules designed to improve the overall safety of heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
EMA sponsors scientific and technical research to improve truck and engine performance and reduce emissions, to develop safety and emissions measurement and test methods, to assure the improvement and compatibility of fuels, and to improve the overall safety and environmental performance of advanced truck and engine technologies.Through research, development, and advocacy, EMA members have successfully worked with government and regulatory agencies to reduce emissions from internal combustion engines by over 99% since EMA was formed more than 40 years ago.
EMA maintains a series of committees organized along major product-lines, such as heavy-duty on-highway trucks and buses, nonroad mobile equipment, marine and locomotive engines, grounds care and utility equipment, stationary engines, and fuels. Each EMA committee is comprised of member company representatives and holds frequent meetings in order to carry out and facilitate EMA's work. In addition to committee meetings, EMA sponsors, participates and develops industry forums, workshops, and conferences in furtherance of EMA's purposes. Through its annual Compliance and OBD Workshops, EMA facilitates an educational exchange among truck and engine manufacturers and government regulators about the compliance process, and provides an important opportunity for industry and government regulators to learn from each other on how to better address the certification and compliance issues that affect the truck and engine manufacturing industry as a whole.
