Recognized for our groundbreaking work in the field of early childhood, we uniquely prepare child development, education, and social work leaders to improve the lives of young children and their families. Our impact and influence is further amplified through our innovative academic programs, applied research, knowledge creation and distribution, direct service, and field-wide advocacy. ACADEMICS: Through contemporary master's degree, doctoral degree, and graduate certificate programs, Erikson Institute prepares leaders in child development, social work, and early childhood education. We offer the most comprehensive, interdisciplinary understanding of children and families through classes on campus and online. We also offer programs to help professionals who work with children and families hone their skills, learn new techniques, and earn credits to maintain their professional licenses. In the Fall of 2020, Erikson enrolled over 460 students into our Masters and PhD programs, as well as our certificate programs. Upon graduating, Erikson's diverse group of over 3,000 alumni go on to work across Chicago, the nation, and internationally in a range of professions where their unique understanding of child development serves children and families both directly and indirectly in education, service, and leadership roles.
DIRECT SERVICES: Erikson provides services directly to children and families, as well as consulting and training for the professionals who serve them. Erikson's Center for Children and Families provided intensive mental health services for nearly 640 children and families in the Chicagoland area in 2020 for 6442 hours of treatment-1540 of which were provided pro-bono. In addition to its main clinic located at Erikson's River North campus, CCF has established three satellite clinics in high-need Chicago neighborhoods. CCF also oversees a broad range, immigration-related trauma initiative, the only one of its kind in the state. In addition, our Fussy Baby Network, a service for families struggling with infant care, served 899 families last year, including families with a baby in the NICU. Finally, our Early Childhood Project with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has expanded its contract to serve nearly 6,000 families annually across Illinois. Through this project, Erikson developmental specialists serve children in the child-welfare system due to abuse or neglect and help the State in crucial decision-making that affect the lives of children and families.
RESEARCH, POLICY & LEADERSHIP: Erikson conducts research that bridges theory and practice, generating new knowledge that invigorates our academic courses, services, and programs, and improves life for children and families in Chicago and throughout the nation. Research areas include early childhood math, social emotional learning, literacy, home based childcare, home visiting programs, and technology and media for children and families. Using evidenced-based research, Erikson's Early Childhood Leadership Academy (ECLA) provides early childhood and civic leaders with content knowledge to make the most informed decisions about policy setting and resource allocation. Participants have included some of the state's leading policymakers and community stakeholders, such as Illinois Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton. Last year, Erikson provided customized childhood trauma-focused learning session for 23 cross-sector leaders working directly with Governor Pritzker's Justice, Equity and Opportunity (JEO) Initiative. Over the past three years alone, nearly 170 individuals have completed our in-depth ECLA leadership programs. Erikson's Early Development Instrument (EDI) Project, a neighborhood-level population measure that gauges the development of young children within the context of their community, recently completed its pilot phase. Erikson's EDI data has allowed our community partners to make great strides for young children and families, including a $1 million increase in Early Childhood Block Grant funding for Greater East St. Louis for preschool expansion and $2.1 million over six years to the Community Foundation of Kankakee River Valley to address childhood trauma and provide resources for families in the county.
