APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM: FOOD SERVICE AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS, THE PROGRAM INCLUDES MENTORSHIP, TRAINING, AND HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE IN AN OPERATIONAL COMMUNITY CAFE. PARTICIPANTS ARE UNDER-RESOURCED AND/OR UNDER-EMPLOYED INDIVIDUALS; MAINLY RESIDENTS OF THE ENGLEWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD, SOUTH SIDE OF CHICAGO, WHERE KUSANYA IS LOCATED. FOOD SERVICE TRACK: INCLUDES FOOD SAFETY, PREPARATION, COOKING AND PRESENTATION; CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS; COFFEE INDUSTRY SKILLS (ROASTING AND DRINK PREPARATION); AND MENTORING IN SOFT SKILLS / INTERPERSONAL SKILLS. ENTREPRENEURSHIP TRACK: LONG-TERM MENTORING FOR PARTICIPANTS WHO HAVE MANAGERIAL, COMMUNITY/LEADERSHIP, OR ENTREPRENURSHIP ASPIRATIONS. PROGRAM INCLUDES GOAL-SETTING AND CREATION/REFINEMENT OF A CONCEPT FOR THE PARTICIPANTS' POTENTIAL BUSINESS OR ORGANIZATION. PARTICIPANTS ARE SUPPORTED AT IN-DEPTH RESEARCH AND CREATING PROFESSIONAL CONNECTIONS SUITABLE FOR THEIR NEXT STEP. HANDS-ON TRAINING INCLUDES HIGH-LEVEL ASPECTS OF STARTING OR MANAGING A FOOD SERVICE BUSINESS, OR COMMUNITY ORG, IE MENU DESIGN, WEBSITE DESIGN, STAFF TRAINING, MARKETING, SUPPLY CHAIN, ACCOUNTING, NONPROFIT PROGRAM DESIGN AND BUDGETING, ETC.
COMMUNITY ARTS & CULTURAL EVENTS APPROXIMATELY 90 EVENTS THIS YEAR. EVENTS ARE FACILITATED BY KUSANYA STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS. COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE WELCOMED IN SHARING THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS WITH THE COMMUNITY THROUGH THESE EVENTS. EVENTS THIS YEAR INCLUDED LOCAL MUSIC, VISUAL ART, POETRY, STORYTELLING, TRAUMA-INFORMED YOGA, ETC. KUSANYA ALSO COLLABORATES WITH OTHER NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS TO ORGANIZE EVENTS.
COMMUNITY EDUCATIONAL EVENTS CLASSES ARE HOSTED USING KUSANYA'S SPACE AND SUPPORTIVE RESOURCES/STAFF AND ARE OFTEN COORDINATED WITH PARTNER NONPROFITS, SCHOOLS, ETC. EXAMPLES INCLUDE PARENTING/FOSTERING CLASSES, OPEN HOUSE NIGHTS FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS, COMMUNITY HEALTH EDUCATION, ETC.
