FOUNDED IN 1934, THE METROPOLITAN PLANNING COUNCIL IS A NONPROFIT, NONPARTISAN GROUP OF BUSINESS AND CIVIC LEADERS COMMITTED TO SERVING THE PUBLIC INTEREST THROUGH THE PROMOTION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF SENSIBLE PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT POLICIES NECESSARY FOR A WORLD-CLASS CHICAGO REGION. THE COUNCIL CONDUCTS POLICY ANALYSIS, OUTREACH AND ADVOCACY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PUBLIC OFFICIALS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS TO IMPROVE EQUITY OF OPPORTUNITY AND QUALITY OF LIFE THROUGHOUT METROPOLITAN CHICAGO.
SINCE 1934, MPC HAS SHAPED A MORE EQUITABLE, SUSTAINABLE AND PROSPEROUS CHICAGOLAND. AN INDEPENDENT, NONPROFIT, NONPARTISAN ORGANIZATION, MPC SERVES COMMUNITIES AND RESIDENTS BY DEVELOPING, PROMOTING AND IMPLEMENTING SOLUTIONS FOR SOUND REGIONAL GROWTH. IN 2019, MPC WORKED ACROSS HOUSING, TRANSPORTATION, LAND USE, WATER RESOURCES AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT TO STEER CHICAGOLAND TOWARD A STRONGER FUTURE IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS: -OUR EQUITABLE FUTURE: MPC CONTINUED TO PROMOTE POLICIES FROM THE 2018 LAUNCH OF OUR EQUITABLE FUTURE, A ROADMAP TO CHALLENGE DECADES OF RACIAL SEGREGATION AND INEQUALITY IN CHICAGOLAND. -STORMWATER MANAGEMENT/ WATER SUPPLY: MPC LAUNCHED A DRINKING WATER 123 ACADEMY FOR MUNICIPAL OFFICIALS ON BEST PRACTICES IN WATER SUPPLY MANAGEMENT, AND RELEASED A STUDY REVEALING WIDESPREAD WATER AFFORDABILITY CHALLENGES FOR RESIDENTS THROUGHOUT CHICAGOLAND. -GREAT RIVERS CHICAGO: MPC SUPPORTED COMMUNITY-BASED PROJECTS TO ADVANCE OUR GREAT RIVERS, THE FIRST-EVER COMPREHENSIVE VISION AND ACTION AGENDA FOR THE CHICAGO, CALUMET, AND DES PLAINES RIVERS. PROJECTS INCLUDED RIVERFRONT SITES TO HONOR NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY, RESEARCH ON PUBLIC HEALTH AROUND RIVERFRONT INDUSTRIAL SITES, AND MORE. -GOVERNMENT EFFICIENCY: THROUGH COORDINATED RESEARCH AND ADVOCACY, MPC LED THE TRANSFORM ILLINOIS COALITION TO SHED LIGHT ON THE INEFFICIENCY OF GOVERNMENT SERVICE DELIVERY IN ILLINOIS. -TRANSPORTATION: MPC RELEASED COMPREHENSIVE RESEARCH AND POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS TO ADVANCE UNIVERSAL MOBILITY, OR TRANSPORTATION ACCESSIBILITY TO SENIORS AND PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. -HOUSING: MPC STAFF LED A CITYWIDE TASK FORCE TO STRENGTHEN EXISTING AFFORDABLE HOUSING ORDINANCES AND INCENTIVES TO ENCOURAGE INCLUSIONARY HOUSING. MPC ALSO LED PRESERVING AFFORDABILITY TOGETHER TO CO-CREATE A STRATEGY FOR LONG-TERM NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSING AFFORDABILITY WITH LOCAL STAKEHOLDERS IN GARFIELD PARK.
