Organizations Filed Purposes: ADVANCING DEBATE EDUCATION IN URBAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO AMPLIFY YOUTH VOICES AND TO DEVELOP CONFIDENCE AND SKILLS FOR FUTURE SUCCESS.

IN 2020, THE URBAN DEBATE NETWORK SERVED 10,246 DEBATERS, REPRESENTING 702 SCHOOLS WITHIN 22 METRO AREAS AROUND THE NATION. OVER 70 PERCENT ARE FROM LOW INCOME FAMILIES AND OVER 80% ARE STUDENTS OF COLOR.

DUE TO PANDEMIC CONCERNS, NAUDL WAS FORCED TO CANCEL ITS ANNUAL DINNER FUNDRAISING EVENT AND ITS 12TH ANNUAL URBAN DEBATE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN HELD IN DALLAS, TEXAS. INSTEAD, NAUDL HELD A VIRTUAL FUNDRAISER, HONORING THE DEBATER OF THE YEAR. THE DEBATER OF THE YEAR AND SEVEN FINALISTS RECEIVED SMALL COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS. A COACH OF THE YEAR WAS ALSO RECOGNIZED WITH A SMALL STIPEND.

CITI FOUNDATION - FINANCIAL LITERACY DEBATE AND CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT: IN 2018, NAUDL EXPANDED FINANCIAL LITERACY DEBATES TO SEVEN CITIES, INCLUDING THE BAY AREA, CHICAGO, DALLAS, LOS ANGELES, MIAMI, NEW YORK, AND WASHINGTON, D.C., WITH SUPPORT FROM THE CITI FOUNDATION. PARTICIPANTS DEBATED THE BENEFITS AND RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH PURSUING EMPLOYMENT IN THE GIG ECONOMY VERSUS TRADITIONAL FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT. 233 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED NATIONALLY. IN FY 2019 NAUDL CONCLUDED CAPACITY BUILDING SUPPORT FOR SEVEN LEAGUES BASED UPON WORK PILOTED WITH THE LOS ANGELES METROPOLITAN DEBATE LEAGUE. NAUDL STAFF TRAINED LEAGUE STAFF IN A TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE APPROACH TO TEACHER SUPPORT FOCUSING ON PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS WHO COACH STUDENTS IN DEBATE.THIS APPROACH CONSISTS OF THREE CORE PROCESS AND SUPPORT BY ELECTRONIC REPORTING DEVELOPED BY NAUDL. WITH A GOAL OF PROVIDING SPECIALIZED TOOLS FOR RECRUITMENT, INSTRUCTION, AND PLANNING AND ORGANIZATION, NAUDL PROVIDED TARGETED SUPPORT USING DATA TO TIER TEACHERS BY NEED, SETTING SMART GOALS. NAUDL CLOSELY MONITORED IMPLEMENTATION AND PROVIDED ESSENTIAL FEEDBACK. OVERALL, NEARLY 350 TEACHERS RECEIVED SUPPORT AND ULTIMATELY MORE THAN 5,000 STUDENTS WERE POSITIVELY IMPACTED. ADDITIONALLY, IMPLEMENTATION OF FINANCIAL LITERACY DEBATES WAS POSTPONED TO FY 2021 DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. THE PROGRAM IS SCHEDULED TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN CHICAGO IN OCTOBER 2020 AND LOS ANGELES IN FEBRUARY 2021 WITH CHICAGO DEBATES AND THE LOS ANGELES METROPOLITAN DEBATE LEAGUE, RESPECTIVELY.
