Organizations Filed Purposes: PROMOTION OF THE FLUTE AND FLUTE COMMUNITY.

CONVENTION: THE NATIONAL FLUTE ASSOCIATION CONVENTION HAS BEEN HELD EVERY YEAR SINCE 1972. EACH YEAR'S FOUR-DAY EVENT, HELD IN ROTATING CITIES AROUND THE COUNTRY, FEATURES SPIRITED PROGRAMMING FOR SOLO AND FLUTE CHOIR RECITALS, MASTER CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS, THE NFA'S WORLD-RENOWNED COMPETITIONS, AND EXHIBITIONS GALORE. TYPICALLY OVER 3,000 MEMBERS ATTEND THIS UNIQUE AND UNPARALLELED FLUTE EXTRAVAGANZA.

MEMBERSHIP: THE NATIONAL FLUTE ASSOCIATION, FOUNDED IN 1972, IS THE LARGEST FLUTE ORGANIZATION IN THE WORLD. MEMBERS FROM MORE THAN 50 COUNTRIES JOIN TOGETHER IN PERSON, ONLINE, AT CONVENTIONS,INFORMALLY AND IN FORUMS, THROUGH PUBLICATIONS AND CLASSROOMS, IN PERFORMANCE, IN FRIENDSHIP AND COLLEGIALITY. GUIDED BY ITS GOALS TO ENCOURAGE A HIGHER STANDARD OF ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE FOR THE FLUTE, ITS PERFORMERS, AND ITS LITERATURE, MEMBERS INCLUDE LEADING SOLOISTS, ORCHESTRAL PLAYERS, JAZZ AND WORLD MUSIC PERFORMERS, TEACHERS, ADULT AMATEURS, AND STUDENTS OF ALL AGES.

Held in a different United States city for four days each August, the NFA convention is the largest annual flute meeting in the world. Each year it is attended by approximately 3000 flutists and flute enthusiasts from all 50 states and as many as 40 countries. Attendees are treated to hundreds of performances across a wide variety of genres, panels and workshops, and an industry trade show. Among the NFAs 19 competitions are 15 performance competitions to select outstanding flutists to perform at its convention. Six are for soloists, five are masterclass competitions, four are for Flute Choir. In addition, there are four non-performance competitions. Many competitions offer cash prizes, and the Young Artist Competition winner receives an additional Career Enhancement Grant. The Myrna Brown International Scholarship (biennial) is open to flutists from a developing country to appear at the convention. The Frances Blaisdell Convention Scholarship provides support for a high school or undergraduate student with financial need to attend the convention. The National Flute Association is a significant national and international player in the commissioning of new works. Since commissioning its first works in the 1980s, the NFA has shepherded more than 85 new works into the musical world.
