Organizations Filed Purposes: The mission of Rush is to improve the health of the individuals and diverse communities we serve through the integration of outstanding patient care, education, research and community partnerships.

Health Care: Rush University Medical Center ("Rush") is an academic medical center that brings together excellence in clinical care and research to address major health problems. Rush was ranked #1 in quality in Vizient's Quality Leadership Award 2019 Quality and Accountability Study among 93 U.S. academic medical centers in 2019. Nearly all of the nation's academic medical centers - 95% - participated in the study. It is the seventh consecutive time that the Medical Center has been ranked in the top five, rising from fourth in 2017 to second in 2018 and now earning the top ranking in 2019. The 2019 study evaluated participating medical centers and hospitals on the basis of safety, mortality, clinical effectiveness, efficiency and patient centeredness. All three Rush University System for Health hospitals also received high marks for quality and patient experience from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), with Rush University Medical Center and Rush Oak Park Hospital earning five-star ratings (the highest designation) and Rush Copley Medical Center earning four stars. In FY20, Rush provided patient care to more than 30,000 inpatients, and the emergency room has the capacity to handle more than 65,000 visits. In U.S. News & World Report's 2019-2020 Best Hospitals rankings, Rush University Medical Center ranked among the top 50 hospitals in five specialties, with two in the top ten and two the highest ranked programs in Illinois. Only 166 of the nearly 3,000 hospitals in the United States that U.S. News evaluated, about 5.5 percent, scored high enough for U.S. News to rank them nationally in even one specialty. The Medical Center is ranked in orthopedics (7th in the country and No. 1 in Illinois), neurology and neurosurgery (8th), gynecology (14th, tops in Illinois), geriatrics (19th), kidney disease (nephrology) (49th). In addition to the national rankings of these five programs, U.S. News gave Rush "High Performing" status in the following programs: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, and gastroenterology and GI surgery. Research: Because Rush is an academic medical center, research and clinical care come together in innovative and inspiring ways that have the power to transform lives. Even if research work starts in a laboratory, it won't stay there. Discoveries in Rush's labs lead to advances in patient care, while observations in clinical settings inspire research studies designed to improve the way we treat patients. This approach, known as translational research, has led to breakthroughs in patient care at Rush throughout the years. Investigators at Rush are involved in more than 1,600 projects, including hundreds of clinical studies to test the effectiveness and safety of new therapies and medical devices, as well as to expand scientific and medical knowledge. Total research awards in FY20 topped $110 million.

Education: Rush University is a health sciences university that includes Rush Medical College, the College of Nursing, the College of Health Sciences and the Graduate College. Founded in 1837, Rush Medical College has an acclaimed history as one of the first medical colleges in the Midwest and continues to make major contributions to medical science and education through research and clinical trials. The College of Nursing is one of the nation's top-ranked nursing colleges with a national reputation for clinical excellence that helps make our graduates highly sought after by top health care employers around the country. The College of Health Sciences has been responsible for education and research in the allied health professions. The Graduate College offers masters and doctoral programs for the next generation of exceptional research and health care professionals. The Medical Center also offers many highly selective residency and fellowship programs in medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties. Rush's unique practitioner-teacher model for health sciences education and research provides its students the opportunity to learn from world-renowned instructors who practice what they teach. With more than 40 degree and certificate options and 60 postgraduate training programs, Rush educated more than 2,800 students in FY20. Rush University provides outstanding health sciences education and conducts major research in a culture of inclusion, focused on the promotion and preservation of the health and wellbeing of our diverse communities.
