NORTHERN ILLINOIS FOOD BANK LEADS THE NORTHERN ILLINOIS COMMUNITY IN SOLVING HUNGER BY PROVIDING NUTRITIOUS MEALS TO THOSE IN NEED THROUGH INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS AND PARTNERSHIPS. THE FOOD BANK HAS DEVELOPED A STRONG FOOD SOLICITATION, ACQUISITION, AND PURCHASING PROGRAM TO ENSURE THAT IT RECEIVES QUALITY FOOD AT THE LOWEST POSSIBLE PRICE, PROVIDING FOOD TO MORE THAN 900 COMMUNITY FOOD PANTRIES AND FEEDING PROGRAMS. SIXTY-EIGHT PERCENT OF FOOD DISTRIBUTED IN FISCAL YEAR 2020 WAS DONATED. IN FISCAL YEAR 2020, THE FOOD BANK DISTRIBUTED APPROXIMATELY 94 MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD, EQUIVALENT TO 80.3 MILLION MEALS. AS A RESULT OF ITS COVID-19 DISASTER RESPONSE EFFORTS FROM MARCH-JUNE, THE FOOD BANK DISTRIBUTED 30 MILLION OF THOSE MEALS TO HELP MEET THE INCREASED NEED ACROSS ITS SERVICE AREA DUE TO THE PANDEMIC.THERE WERE 555 MOBILE PANTRY VISITS THAT DISTRIBUTED MORE THAN 3.3 MILLION MEALS TO 69,430 HOUSEHOLDS, AND THE FOOD BANK PROVIDED 1.9 MILLION MEALS TO CHILDREN THROUGH THE BACKPACK, AFTERSCHOOL, AND SUMMER MEAL PROGRAMS. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO PROVIDED MORE THAN 335,000 MEALS TO SENIORS THROUGH ITS SENIOR BOX AND SENIOR MOBILE PROGRAMS DURING THE FISCAL YEAR. ADDITIONALLY, THROUGH CONTINUED COLLABORATION WITH LOCAL DAIRIES AND GENEROUS DONORS, THE FOOD BANK DISTRIBUTED 174,000 GALLONS OF FRESH 1% MILK TO ITS NETWORK PARTNERS IN FY20 AS WELL. THE FOOD BANK'S SNAP OUTREACH TEAM ALSO ASSISTED 2,000 HOUSEHOLDS IN APPLYING FOR BENEFITS, RESULTING IN 1.6 MILLION MEALS.THE FOOD BANK DISTRIBUTED 2.2 MILLION MEALS THROUGH ITS WINNEBAGO COMMUNITY MARKET PROGRAM IN ROCKFORD, AND ALSO PROVIDED 826,000 MEALS BY FULFILLING MORE THAN 20,000 ORDERS THROUGH ITS MY PANTRY EXPRESS ONLINE FOOD PANTRY PROGRAM.
