To enhance the well-being of older adults through choral music in a fun, welcoming community of singers. Non-auditioned choirs, directed by professionals, rehearse and perform free community concerts.
Sounds Good Choir the Organization provides this flagship program to enhance the well-being of older adults, age 55 and up (currently serving people through age 93), through choral-music programming under the direction of professional choral conductors. The Sounds Good program creates a fun, encouraging, and supportive non-auditioned environment in which older adults learn habits of good vocal health. Participants, including lifelong choral singers and newcomers alike, learn and prepare challenging 3- and 4-part choral music with piano accompaniment over a 15-week session in spring and fall,and an 8-week summer session, culminating in free public performances. Good Memories Choir the Organization provides this choir to bring joy and social connection to the lives of older adults with early-stage memory loss and their care partners, who sing together along with a group of singing volunteers in an ensemble directed by professional choral conductors. During 2019, Good Memories held weekly rehearsals throughout the year in downtown Chicago and launched its Evanston program in the fall. Good Memories gathers weekly for a 90-minute session that includes stretching and vocal warmups, work on 3-part mixed-choir repertoire with piano, and social time with coffee and snacks. The choir is designed to give physical, emotional, social, and spiritual benefits to all participants and particularly to combat the social isolation so common with not only people who are experiencing dementia but also those who care for them.
