Organizations Filed Purposes: THE HOMEWOOD SCIENCE CETNER IS ORGANIZED EXCLUSIVELY FOR CHARITABLE AND EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES WITHIN THE MEANING OF SECTION 501(C)3 OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE OF 1986, AS AMENDED, INCLUDING DEVELOPING AND OPERATING A COMMUNITY SCIENCE CENTER TO ADVANCE LEARNING FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES IN THE AREAS OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY.

POPUP SCIENCE PROMOTES EARLY LEARNING AND PARENTS' INVOLVEMENT IN THEIR CHILDREN'S EDUCATION, TO HELP KIDS SUCCEED IN SCHOOL. DURING THIS FREE SUMMER LEARNING SERIES OF SPECIAL, ONE-DAY EVENTS, FAMILIES MEET EXPERTS IN SCIENCE AND TECHNICAL FIELDS AND EXPLORE SCIENTIFIC TOPICS TOGETHER. "BEING ABLE TO TALK TO A SCIENTIST IS INVALUABLE. HOW MANY OPPORTUNITIES DO KIDS GET TO DO THAT?" ASKED MARIA BAYNES OF CHICAGO, WHO ATTENDED WITH HER DAUGHTER. WE OFFER PRE-K MATH ACTIVITIES IN OUR EARLY LEARNING LAB FOR FAMILIES OF 3-6-YEAR-OLDS DURING POPUP SCIENCE EVENTS. SINCE 2016, OVER 6,500 ATTENDEES HAVE LEARNED ABOUT CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS, AND MORE AT POPUP SCIENCE.

GIRLS STEAM AHEAD IS A SUITE OF INTERVENTIONS THAT CONNECTS FEMALE STUDENTS IN GRADES 3-12 WITH PEER MENTORS AND DIVERSE FEMALE PROFESSIONALS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART, AND MATH. FEMALE MENTORS ARE A POWERFUL FORCE TO HELP GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN MAINTAIN CONFIDENCE IN THEIR SKILLS, FEEL A SENSE OF BELONGING, AND STAY COMMITTED TO PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL GOALS IN STEM. STUDENT AMIRAH MUHAMMAD SAID THE PROGRAM SHOWED HER "THE STEM WORLD CAN OPEN UP TO WOMEN, SPECIFICALLY MINORITY WOMEN." IN 2019, ONE-THIRD OF THE STUDENTS AT OUR ANNUAL GIRLS STEAM AHEAD CONFERENCE WERE FROM SCHOOLS WITH MINORITY STUDENT POPULATIONS OVER 90%.

HOMEWOOD SCIENCE CENTER FIELD TRIPS ARE SUPPORTED BY THE NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS. STUDENTS LEARN STEM VOCABULARY, ARE INTRODUCED TO STEM PRINCIPLES, AND PERFORM HANDS-ON STEM ACTIVITIES. "KIDS NEED TO BE HANDS-ON TO UNDERSTAND. THIS HELPS THEM GET ENTHUSED ABOUT LEARNING," SAID ONE TEACHER ABOUT THE PROGRAM. THE 2,275 STUDENTS WHO ATTENDED FIELD TRIPS LAST YEAR REPRESENTED 27 SCHOOLS WITH AVERAGE MINORITY AND LOW-INCOME POPULATIONS OF 68% AND 62%, RESPECTIVELY. WE SOLICIT GRANTS AND CORPORATE SPONSORS TO SUPPORT FIELD TRIPS FOR UNDER RESOURCED SCHOOLS.
