Organizations Filed Purposes: THE ILLINOIS HOLOCAUST MUSEUM AND EDUCATION CENTER IS DEDICATED TO PRESERVING THE LEGACY OF THE HOLOCAUST BY HONORING THE MEMORIES OF THOSE WHO WERE LOST AND BY TEACHING UNIVERSAL LESSONS THAT COMBAT HATRED, PREJUDICE AND INDIFFERENCE. THE MUSEUM FULFILLS ITS MISSION THROUGH THE EXHIBITION, PRESERVATION AND INTERPRETATION OF ITS COLLECTIONS AND THROUGH EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES THAT FOSTER THE PROMOTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS AND THE ELIMINATION OF GENOCIDE.

TO RECORD, REMEMBER, AND EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST AND HOW IT RELATES TO CURRENT ISSUES.

THE ILLINOIS HOLOCAUST MUSEUM AND EDUCATION CENTER CONTAINS THE LARGEST COLLECTION IN THE MIDWEST OF MEMORABILIA DONATED BY SURVIVORS AND LIBERATORS OF THE HOLOCAUST. THE MUSEUM, WHICH OPENED ITS DOORS TO THE PUBLIC ON APRIL 19, 2009, IS DEDICATED TO PRESERVING THE MEMORIES OF THOSE LOST IN THE HOLOCAUST AND TEACHING CURRENT GENERATIONS ABOUT THE NEED TO FIGHT HATRED, INDIFFERENCE AND GENOCIDE IN TODAY'S WORLD.

THE MUSEUM FACILITATES SEMINARS, SYMPOSIA, AND TRAINING WORKSHOPS REGARDING HOLOCAUST EDUCATION. THROUGH ITS SPEAKERS' BUREAU, SURVIVORS AND LIBERATORS OF THE HOLOCAUST ARE AVAILABLE TO ADDRESS AUDIENCES REGARDING THE HOLOCAUST. THE MUSEUM OFFERS A WIDE ARRAY OF PUBLIC PROGRAMS INCLUDING COMMEMORATIONS, GUEST SPEAKERS, CONCERTS, AND FAMILY PROGRAMS. DOCENT-LED AND SELF-GUIDED TOURS ARE AVAILABLE TO SCHOOLS, UNIVERSITIES, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

THE MUSEUM HAS FIVE EXHIBITION SPACES: 1) THE ZEV AND SHIFRA KARKOMI EXHIBITION TELLS THE STORY OF THE HOLOCAUST THROUGH OBJECTS AND VOICES OF CHICAGOLAND SURVIVORS FROM PRE-WAR GERMAN LIFE THROUGH THE CONCENTRATION CAMPS TO EVENTUAL LIBERATION. MORE THAN 500 DOCUMENTS, PHOTOGRAPHS, AND ARTIFACTS, INCLUDING A GERMAN RAIL CAR OF THE TYPE USED IN NAZI DEPORTATION PROGRAMS, ILLUSTRATE THE NARRATIVE OF THE HOLOCAUST. THIS EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS A COLLECTION OF 27,000 ARTIFACTS THAT THE MUSEUM STEWARDS. 2) MAKE A DIFFERENCE! THE HARVEY L. MILLER FAMILY YOUTH EXHIBITION, IS A STATE-OF-THE-ART, INTERACTIVE EXHIBIT THAT HELPS YOUNGER VISITORS IDENTIFY WHO THEY ARE AS INDIVIDUALS AND LEARN HOW TO MAKE THE PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS: DIFFICULT DECISIONS THAT LEAD TO BEING AN "UPSTANDER" RATHER THAN A BYSTANDER. 3) TAKE A STAND CENTER IS AN IMMERSIVE PERMANENT EXHIBITION WITH A FORWARD-LOOKING EMPHASIS ON MULTIPLE AREAS OF SOCIAL JUSTICE AND AN INTERACTIVE, HOLOGRAPHIC SURVIVOR STORIES EXPERIENCE. FOUR INTERACTIVE GALLERIES GUIDE VISITORS THROUGH SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUES, EMPOWERING THEM WITH KNOWLEDGE AND INSPIRATION AND REMINDING THEM TO STAND AGAINST HATRED IN ALL ITS FORMS. 4) THE ROOM OF REMEMBRANCE PAYS SPECIAL HOMAGE TO THE SIX MILLION JEWS MURDERED DURING THE HOLOCAUST. 5) THE PRITZKER HALL OF REFLECTION PROVIDES A CONTEMPLATIVE SPACE FOR VISITORS COMPLETING THEIR JOURNEY THROUGH THE MUSEUM
