TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF THOSE AFFECTED BY BRAIN INJURY IN MICHIGAN AND TO REDUCE THE INCIDENCE AND IMPACT OF BRAIN INJURY THROUGH ADVOCACY, AWARENESS, EDUCATION, PREVENTION, RESEARCH AND SUPPORT.
TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF THOSE AFFECTED BY BRAIN INJURY.
EDUCATION: PROGRAMS PROVIDED BY THE BRAIN INJURY ASSOCIATION OF MICHIGAN (BIAMI) INCLUDED OUR ANNUAL TWO-DAY CONFERENCE WITH AN UNDUPLICATED COUNT OF 1,712 WITH BRAIN INJURIES, THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS, PROFESSIONALS IN THE FIELD OF BRAIN INJURY, INSURANCE AND MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS. OVER $3,200 IN REDUCED REGISTRATION FEES WERE PROVIDED TO 80 PERSONS WITH BRAIN INJURIES AND/OR THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS ATTENDING THE CONFERENCE. NEW THIS PAST YEAR WAS THE FACT THAT THE CONFERENCE ALSO INCLUDED SEPARATE EDUCATIONAL TRACKS FOR SURVIVORS AND ATTORNEYS, AS THE LEGAL AND SURVIVOR CONFERENCES THAT WERE PREVIOUSLY HELD AS SEPARATE EVENTS WERE MERGED INTO THE FALL CONFERENCE AND ENHANCED ITS VALUE. THE BIAMI AGAIN EXHIBITED ITS "UNMASKING BRAIN INJURY" PROJECT DURING BRAIN INJURY AWARENESS MONTH (MARCH), AND ALSO DISTRIBUTED INFORMATION AT 23 COMMUNITY EVENTS REACHING OVER 7,000 INDIVIDUALS, IN ADDITION TO THE SEVERAL THOUSAND AT THE ANN ARBOR ART FAIR. THE BIAMI ALSO PARTICIPATED IN THREE CONCUSSION-RELATED MOVIE SCREENINGS ACROSS THE STATE, SUBSEQUENTLY MODERATING PANEL DISCUSSIONS AND AUDIENCE Q&AS ON CONCUSSION SIGNS, SYMPTOMS AND MANAGEMENT. GRANTS: THIRTEEN EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS OF $1,000 EACH WERE AWARDED TO GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS PURSUING A CAREER IN EITHER HEALTH CARE OR REHABILITATION FIELDS. THIS PROGRAM IS THE RESULT OF THE SUPPORT OF SPECIAL TREE REHABILITATION SYSTEMS.
SUPPORT SERVICES FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH A BRAIN INJURY AND VETERANS, CHAPTER SUPPORT 1) IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE BRAIN INJURY ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA, BIAMI CONTINUED ITS PARTNERSHIP AS ONE OF THE NATIONAL BRAIN INJURY INFORMATION CENTERS (NBIIC) IN 2019. A SINGLE NATION-WIDE TOLL-FREE NUMBER ROUTES CALLS MADE IN MICHIGAN DIRECTLY TO BIAMI STAFF. BIAMI STAFF ALSO SERVES AS A REGIONAL HUB FOR THIS SYSTEM DURING TIMES WHEN NATIONAL STAFF IS UNABLE TO HANDLE CALLS. 2) SUPPORT PROGRAMS INCLUDE 20 CHAPTERS AND SUPPORT GROUPS THROUGHOUT MICHIGAN THAT MEET MONTHLY WITH OVER 4,700 PEOPLE ATTENDING DURING THE YEAR. STAFF RESPONDED TO OVER 2,000 CALLS ON THE TOLL FREE TELEPHONE LINE REQUIRING OVER 1,700 HOURS OF SUPPORT. INDIVIDUALIZED PACKETS OF INFORMATION WERE SENT TO ASSIST FAMILIES AND PERSONS WITH BRAIN INJURIES. IN 2019, THE CONTINUED USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA RESULTED IN MANY ADDITIONAL INQUIRIES. BIAMI HAD 8,329 FOLLOWERS; 254,800 IMPRESSIONS ON TWITTER; AND 811 VIEWS ON YOUTUBE IN 2019. 3) THE SURVIVORS' COMMITTEE MET PERIODICALLY AND ORGANIZED RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES. IN THE SPRING, A SHOPPING "SPRING FLING" WEEKEND WAS HELD FOR 75 PERSONS WITH BRAIN INJURIES AND THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS. DURING THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE, THE COMMITTEE PLANNED, ORGANIZED AND CONDUCTED A DINNER AND DANCE FOR 158 MEMBERS. THIS EVENT WAS SPONSORED BY THE ASSOCIATION. BIAMI AND ITS CHAPTERS HOSTED SOCIAL AND RECREATIONAL EVENTS FOR MORE THAN 2,200 SURVIVORS, FAMILY MEMBERS AND VETERANS THAT INCREASED BRAIN INJURY AWARENESS, NETWORKING AND SUPPORT. 4) DURING 2019, OUR PROGRAM OUTREACH COORDINATOR FIELDED OVER 200 INFORMATION AND REFERRAL CALLS, WHILE ALSO SOLIDIFYING STRONG AND COLLABORATIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER DISABILITY/ADVOCACY ORGANIZATIONS. 2019 WAS ALSO THE FIRST YEAR WE WERE INVITED TO STAFF A BOOTH AT THE MICHIGAN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY STATE CONFERENCE PROVIDING EDUCATION/INFORMATION ON CBIS AND THE SERVICES BIAMI PROVIDES. ALSO IN 2019, BIAMI BEGAN WORKING WITH MP&A, MI DISABILITY NETWORK, MSU USABILITY/ACCESSIBILITY RESEARCH AND CONSULTING, MI DISABILITY AND RESOURCE CENTER, MI DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY COUNCIL, AND MI STATE BUREAU OF ELECTIONS TO PLAN COMPREHENSIVE "VOTING RIGHTS" EVENTS TO TAKE PLACE BEFORE THE AUGUST PRIMARY AND CONTINUE THROUGH FALL BEFORE THE GENERAL ELECTION IN NOVEMBER. IN FEB OF 2019, BIAMI ACCOMPANIED ONE OF OUR CHAPTER PRESIDENTS TO WASHINGTON D.C. TO MEET WITH CONGRESSWOMAN DINGELL'S OFFICE AS WELL AS SENATOR STABENOW'S OFFICE TO ADDRESS THE ADMINISTRATION'S POTENTIAL CHANGES TO MEDICAID. 5) PUBLIC POLICY: IN COOPERATION WITH THE MICHIGAN BRAIN INJURY PROVIDER COUNCIL AND THE COALITION PROTECTING AUTO NO FAULT, THE BIAMI LAUNCHED AN AGGRESSIVE AND DEDICATED EFFORT TO PREVENT OMINOUS PROPOSED CHANGES TO MICHIGAN'S AUTO NO FAULT SYSTEM. DESPITE THESE EFFORTS, THE LEGISLATURE AND THE GOVERNOR'S PASSING OF THESE CHANGES IN JUNE NECESSITATED AN EQUALLY AGGRESSIVE "EDUCATE AND INFORM" CAMPAIGN, LAUNCHED IN SEPTEMBER AROUND A HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL RALLY AT THE CAPITOL, EXTOLLING LEGISLATORS AND THE GOVERNOR TO "FIX THE FIX." JUST OVER 3,000 PARTICIPANTS WALKED FROM THE CONFERENCE CENTER TO THE CAPITOL STEPS, WHERE MANY SPEAKERS WARNED OF THE IMPENDING CONSEQUENCES OF THE NEW LAW IF LEFT AS PASSED. BIAMI SUBSEQUENTLY PARTICIPATED IN NUMEROUS TOWN HALL MEETINGS IN SELECT DISTRICTS ACROSS THE STATE DESIGNED TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON WHAT THEY NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT THEIR AVAILABLE INSURANCE OPTIONS AND THE RESULTING NEGATIVE FINANCIAL IMPACT TO THEMSELVES AND THE STATE.
PREVENTION: BIAMI PARTICIPATED IN NUMEROUS EVENTS PROMOTING CONCUSSION PREVENTION SUCH AS: PONTIAC FITFEST, FAMILY FUN DAY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH HEALTHY WAYNE COALITION AND THE HURON VALLEY WELLNESS EXPO. THE ASSOCIATION ALSO UTILIZED MATERIALS AND WEBSITE BANNERS AS PART OF THE NATIONAL BRAIN INJURY AWARENESS MONTH ACTIVITIES IN MARCH. THIS YEAR'S THEME WAS AGAIN NOT ALONE IN BRAIN INJURY". OTHER PREVENTION EFFORTS IN 2019 INCLUDED THE DISPLAY OF THE ASSOCIATION'S "UNMASKING BRAIN INJURY" EXHIBIT AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS ACROSS THE STATE, INCLUDING THE REHABILITATION INSTITUTE OF MICHIGAN AND ST. JOSEPH HOSPITAL IN ANN ARBOR; PRINT AND BROADCAST PSAS; AND THREE MOVIE SCREENINGS OF THE FILM "CRASH REEL" FOLLOWED BY CONCUSSION PANEL DISCUSSIONS AT MOVIE THEATERS ACROSS MICHIGAN. THIS WAS ALSO OUR SIXTH YEAR OF DISTRIBUTING BICYCLE HELMETS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SINAS, DRAMIS LAW FIRM IN GRAND RAPIDS, LANSING AND TRAVERSE CITY, GIVING AWAY A GRAND TOTAL OF OVER 4,500 HELMETS TO CHILDREN ACROSS THE STATE. THE BIAMI ALSO DEVELOPED AND LAUNCHED A NEW PREVENTION PROGRAM TOWARDS THE END OF 2019 CALLED "THINK AHEAD," DESIGNED TO EDUCATE AND INCENTIVIZE KIDS OF ALL AGES TO WEAR THEIR HELMETS WHEN PARTICIPATING IN INDIVIDUAL YEAR-ROUND RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES (E.G., BIKING, SNOWBOARDING, ETC.). THE PROGRAM SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED IN DECEMBER OF 2019 WITH SKI PATROL MEMBERS AT 35 DIFFERENT SKI LOCATIONS ACROSS MICHIGAN DISTRIBUTING 40,000 DISCOUNT COUPONS FROM 21 PARTICIPATING SKI RETAIL OUTLETS ACROSS THE STATE TO KIDS NOT WEARING THEIR HELMETS, AND FREE HOT CHOCOLATE COUPONS FROM MACDONALDS AS A REWARD TO KIDS "CAUGHT" WEARING THEIR HELMETS. NINE STATEWIDE SPONSORS/PARTNERS FACILITATED THE SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH, PROVIDING ESSENTIAL FINANCIAL AND IN-KIND SUPPORT IN THE PROCESS.
