Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION OF LAHC IS TO EMPOWER COMMUNITIES, ONE FAMILY AT A TIME, BY ADVANCING THE EDUCATIONAL, SOCIAL, HEALTH AND ECONOMIC WELL-BEING OF SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN RESIDENTS.

THE HEALTHY LIVING PROGRAM EMPOWERS CHILDREN AND FAMILIES IN UNDERPRIVILEGED COMMUNITIES TO TAKE CONTROL OF THEIR HEALTH BY PROVIDING THEM WITH SKILLS TO MAKE HEALTHY, EDUCATED FOOD CHOICES. RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT FAMILIES PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN CHILDHOOD OBESITY, SO WE INCLUDE CHILDREN, THEIR FAMILIES, AND THEIR CAREGIVERS IN OUR COMPHREHENSIVE STRATEGY TO OBESITY PREVENTION AND REDUCTION.

THE YOUTH LEADERSHIP BRIDGE TO COLLEGE PROGRAM (YLBCP)PROVIDES HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS AND SENIORS, FROM UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES IN SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN, WITH PROGRAMMING THAT FOCUSES ON LEADERSHIP, LIFE SKILLS, DIVERSITY, MENTORSHIP, COLLEGE ACCESS, AND SETTING CAREER GOALS, AS WELL AS INSTILLING IN THE STUDENTS A SENSE OF EMPOWERMENT TO MAKE CHANGES WITHIN THEIR COMMUNITY. LAHC PARTNERS WITH THE SCHOOLS TO OFFER ITS SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION PROGRAM, AN INTERVENTION THAT COMBINES MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES, LIFE SKILLS TRAINING, AND HEALTH EDUCATION, TO DIRECTLY ADDRESS AND MITIGATE THE EFFECTS OF CHILDHOOD TRAUMA AND REDUCE HEALTH DISPARITIES. THE PROGRAM HAS FOUR OBJECTIVES: 1) ENHANCE COGNITIVE AND BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCY RELATED TO CHILDHOOD OR INTERGENERATIONAL TRAUMA. 2) SCREEN FOR MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS AMONG HIGH-RISK YOUTH WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED TRAUMA. 3) IMPROVE ACCESS TO CULTURALLY COMPETENT MENTAL HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS. 4) INCREASE AND IMPROVE PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT.
