DETROIT FOOD ACADEMY IS A NON-PROFIT YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM THAT WORKS WITH LOCAL EDUCATORS, CHEFS, AND BUSINESS OWNERS TO INSPIRE YOUNG DETROITERS THROUGH ENTREPRENEURIAL EXPERIENCES ROOTED IN FOOD--EXPERIENCES, WHICH OPEN DOORS, CREATE CONNECTIONS, AND CULTIVATE CONFIDENCE. FROM COOKING DELICIOUS HEALTHY MEALS FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO FACILITATING COMPLEX CONVERSATIONS WITH COMMUNITY, TO DEVELOPING ARTISANAL FOOD PROJECTS FROM SCRATCH TO MARKET, STUDENTS LEARN BY TRANSFORMING THEIR IDEAS INTO REALITY. BY DEVELOPING FOOD-BASED SOLUTIONS IN AND FOR THEIR COMMUNITIES, STUDENTS WILL ACHIEVE THE GOAL OF LEARNING TO IDENTIFY PROBLEMS, IMPLEMENT SOLUTIONS, AND GROW AS HOLISTIC LEADERS WHO ARE HEALTHY, CONNECTED, AND POWERFUL TO AFFECT CHANGE WITHIN AND BEYOND THE LOCAL FOOD SYSTEM. STUDENTS GRADUATE OUR PROGRAM AS ENTREPRENEURIAL THINKERS CONFIDENT IN THEIR OWN POWER, CONSCIOUS OF THE FOOD SYSTEM, FAMILIAR WITH BUSINESS PRINCIPLES, CONNECTED TO NETWORKS OF MENTORSHIP AND SUPPORT, AND PRE
DETROIT FOOD ACADEMY PARTNERS WITH LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS, EDUCATORS, AND FOOD ENTREPRENEURS TO FACILITATE A YEAR-ROUND PROGRAM. AS STUDENTS DEVELOP FOOD-BASED SOLUTIONS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES, THEY GROW AS HOLISTIC LEADERS WHO ARE HEALTHY, CONNECTED, AND POWERFUL.
THE SMALL BATCH DETROIT PROGRAM EMPLOYED 20 STUDENTS IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND OPERATION OF FOOD ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROJECTS, ALONG WITH PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, HANDS-ON TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES, AND MENTORSHIP.
DETROIT FOOD ACADEMY OPERATES AN EXPERIENTIAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM DEDICATED TO TRANSFORMING THE LIVES OF YOUNG DETROITERS THROUGH FOOD AND SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP.THE DETROIT FOOD ACADEMY OFFERED 4 PROGRAMS DURING THE 2019 YEAR: THE SCHOOL-BASED LEADERSHIP PROGRAM, ADVANCED LEADERSHIP PROGRAM, SUMMER LEADERSHIP PROGRAM,AND SMALL BATCH PROGRAM. THESE PROGRAMS REACHED OVER 400 STUDENTS FROM 18 HIGH SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY SITES ACROSS DETROIT. IN SPRING 2019, STUDENTS CREATED A TRIPLE BOTTOMLINE FOOD PROJECT TO SHARE WITH THEIR CLASSMATES AND SCHOOL. IN FALL 2019, STUDENTS JOINED THE DETROIT FOOD ACADEMY'S YOUTH-LED, YEARLONG AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM. THESE STUDENTS MET REGULARLY TO CREATE A FALL MEALSHARE A COMMUNITY-DINNER FEATURING YOUTH-FACILITATED CONVERSATION AND ACTIVITIES AS WELL AS YOUTH-DESIGNED MENUS. THIS PROJECT ALLOWED STUDENTS TO EXPLORE THE FOOD SYSTEMS, CULINARY ARTS, BUSINESS AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS. IN ADDITION, THIS PROJECT PROMOTED COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS AROUND FOOD AS STUDENTS INVITED THEIR FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND SCHOOL STAFF TO SHARE A CONVERSATION AND A MEAL TOGETHER.DFA ALSO FACILITATED ONE-DAY INTENSIVE WORKSHOPS FOR 6TH GRADE STUDENTS CITYWIDE, ENGAGING OVER 2,000 YOUTH IN DESIGNING THEIR OWN GOOD FOOD BUSINESSES IDEA HANDS-ON.
