GLEANERS EXISTS TO PROVIDE HOUSEHOLDS WITH ACCESS TO SUFFICIENT, NUTRITIOUS FOOD, AND RELATED RESOURCES. WE ACCOMPLISH THIS THROUGH COLLABORATION, EFFICIENT OPERATIONS, EDUCATION, AND INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS TO ACHIEVE A HUNGER-FREE COMMUNITY IN SOUTHEASTERN MICHIGAN. HEADQUARTERED IN DETROIT, GLEANERS SERVES FIVE SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN COUNTIES: WAYNE, OAKLAND, MACOMB, LIVINGSTON, AND MONROE. GLEANERS PROVIDES FOOD TO MORE THAN 660 PARTNER SOUP KITCHENS, FOOD PANTRIES, SHELTERS, AND OTHER AGENCIES ACROSS THE REGION, AND SUPPLEMENTS EFFORTS OF THOSE PARTNERS BY OFFERING DIRECT SERVICE DRIVE-UP GROCERY AND FOOD BOX DISTRIBUTIONS. IN ITS FISCAL YEAR 2020, GLEANERS DISTRIBUTED NEARLY 64 MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD TO NEIGHBORS IN NEED.
GLEANERS CORE ACTIVITY INVOLVES SECURING, STORING AND DISTRIBUTING NUTRITIOUS FOOD TO THOSE IN NEED VIA A NETWORK OF COMMUNITY PARTNERS, SCHOOLS AND PROGRAMS LOCATED THROUGHOUT WAYNE, OAKLAND, MACOMB, LIVINGSTON AND MONROE COUNTIES. IN FY 2020, GLEANERS' TOTAL FOOD DISTRIBUTIONS EXPANDED SIGNIFICANTLY TO 63.8 MILLION POUNDS, EQUATING TO OVER 53 MILLION MEALS, IN LINE WITH THE INCREASED COMMUNITY NEED DRIVEN BY THE PANDEMIC. GLEANERS RAPIDLY ESCALATED EMERGENCY FOOD DISTRIBUTION PROGRAMS IN MARCH AT THE OUTSET OF THE PANDEMIC, LEVERAGING AN EXPANDED NETWORK OF 666 COMMUNITY PARTNERS TO MAKE NUTRITIOUS FOOD READILY AVAILABLE TO ALL THOSE SEEKING ASSISTANCE. DISTRIBUTIONS THROUGH NEWLY ADDED EMERGENCY FOOD MOBILE UNITS TARGETING FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN UNDER THE SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM (DETAILED IN PROGRAM II) TOTALED 5.0 MILLION POUNDS OF THE 63.8 MILLION POUNDS TOTAL DISTRIBUTIONS.IN FY 2020, GLEANERS SERVED STUDENTS AND FAMILIES THROUGH 1,446 SCHOOL MOBILE DISTRIBUTIONS AT 98 SITES WITH 4.7 MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD, REPRESENTING $5.6 MILLION IN HOUSEHOLD ECONOMIC BENEFIT. OUR BACKPACK PROGRAM TARGETS LOW-INCOME CHILDREN IN NEED OF FOOD OVER THE WEEKEND WHEN THERE IS NO ACCESS TO THE FREE BREAKFAST OR LUNCH THEY WOULD ORDINARILY RECEIVE IN SCHOOL. IN FY 2020, 27,700 BACKPACKS WERE DISTRIBUTED TO 1,450 CHILDREN BEFORE SCHOOLS CLOSED. EACH BACKPACK CONTAINS SHELF-STABLE MILK, CANNED PROTEIN, FRUIT AND VEGETABLES, AND WHOLE-GRAIN CEREAL OR CRACKERS.MNMG IS A WEEKLY POP-UP RETAIL GROCERY MODEL THAT BRINGS NUTRITIOUS, QUALITY, AFFORDABLE FOOD TO COMMUNITIES ACROSS SE MICHIGAN WHO FACE TRANSPORTATION BARRIERS. IN FY 2020, MNMG WAS A TRUSTED, RELIABLE AND SAFE FOOD SOURCE FOR THE SENIORS AND VETERANS AT THE 18 WEEKLY SITES WHO WERE ESPECIALLY IMPACTED BY THE PANDEMIC. MNMG CONDUCTED 635 SHOPPING SESSIONS IN FY 2020, SERVING 2,235 SENIORS AND VETERANS, PROVIDING $568,000 IN ECONOMIC BENEFIT TO THOSE SERVED.PROVIDING NUTRITIOUS FOOD THAT FAMILIES WANT AND NEED IS A PRIORITY, INCLUDING FRESH MILK. LEVERAGING A BROAD RANGE OF INDUSTRY AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS, INCLUDING THE UNITED DAIRY INDUSTRY OF MICHIGAN AND THE MICHIGAN DAIRY FARMERS, GLEANERS WAS ABLE TO SOURCE AND DISTRIBUTE OVER 600,000 GALLONS OF FLUID MILK TO THE COMMUNITY IN FY 2020.PRE-PANDEMIC, ACCORDING TO FEEDING AMERICA'S NATIONAL REPORT ON CHARITABLE FOOD DISTRIBUTIONS, 428,700 UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS WERE SERVED ANNUALLY BY THE NETWORK OF PANTRIES, SOUP KITCHENS, SCHOOLS AND SHELTERS THAT MAKE UP THE GLEANERS' NETWORK. THE PANDEMIC HAS DRIVEN A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE IN NEED, AND WE ARE SEEING MANY HOUSEHOLDS WHO HAVE NOT PREVIOUSLY HAD TO TURN TO THE EMERGENCY FOOD NETWORK FOR SUPPORT. IN ADDITION TO THOSE SERVED THROUGH OUR PARTNER NETWORK, GLEANERS ADDITIONAL PANDEMIC DISTRIBUTIONS IN FY 2020 SERVED OVER 350,000 HOUSEHOLDS.
THE SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM (SFSP) IS SUPPORTED BY THE USDA AND MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND PROVIDES BREAKFAST AND LUNCH FOR LOW-INCOME CHILDREN DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS OR WHEN SCHOOL IS CLOSED AND STUDENTS DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO NUTRITIOUS SCHOOL MEALS. SFSP WAS LAUNCHED IN MARCH 2020 RATHER THAN JUNE UNDER PROVISIONS OF UNANTICIPATED SCHOOL CLOSURE TO ADDRESS PANDEMIC NEEDS FOR ACCESS TO MEALS. MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION WORKED WITH GLEANERS TO PROVIDE A NEW MODEL OF SERVICE WHICH INCLUDED GROCERY PANTRIES RATHER THAN PREPARED MEALS. 93,000 HOUSEHOLDS WITH CHILDREN ACCESSED BI-WEEKLY GROCERY PANTRIES. ADDITIONALLY, 17,700 HOUSEHOLDS WITHOUT CHILDREN ACCESSED NON-PROGRAM HEALTHY GROCERIES AT THESE SAME DISTRIBUTIONS LOCATIONS. 47 PARTNERS HOSTED MOBILE PANTRIES UNDER SFSP. THIS GROCERY MODEL PROVIDED OVER 5.6 MILLION MEALS.TRADITIONAL SFSP PREPARED MEALS WERE OFFERED AT 42 SITES JULY THROUGH AUGUST. THESE WERE AVAILABLE AT BOTH CENTER-BASED PROGRAMS AND ON THREE MOBILE SERVICE ROUTES SERVING 74,432 BREAKFASTS AND LUNCHES.CHILD AND ADULT CARE FEEDING PROGRAM (CACFP), SUPPORTED BY THE USDA AND THE MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, PROVIDED AFTERSCHOOL SUPPERS FOR LOW-INCOME CHILDREN. MEALS WERE SERVED AT SCHOOLS AND ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDING AFTERSCHOOL ENRICHMENT FOR YOUTH DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR. FROM SEPTEMBER 2019 TO MARCH 2020, GLEANERS SERVED 78,279 CACFP MEALS TO 1,697 CHILDREN, AFTER WHICH SITES CLOSED DUE TO THE PANDEMIC.
SHARE OUR STRENGTH'S COOKING MATTERS (CM) IS A NATIONAL NUTRITION EDUCATION PROGRAM THAT TEACHES FAMILIES WITH LOW-INCOME HOW TO PREPARE HEALTHY MEALS ECONOMICALLY AND HOW CHILDREN CAN MAKE HEALTHIER CHOICES. LED BY EMPLOYEE AND VOLUNTEER CHEFS AND NUTRITIONISTS, CM TEACHES ADULTS COOKING AND FOOD MANAGEMENT SKILLS, AND INTRODUCES YOUTH TO CONCEPTS OF GOOD NUTRITION AND HOW TO IMPROVE HEALTHY BEHAVIORS. IN FY 2020, 1,494 PEOPLE GRADUATED FROM THE PROGRAM. ADULT PROGRAM GRADUATES SAVED AN AVERAGE OF $263 PER YEAR THROUGH IMPROVED FOOD MANAGEMENT SKILLS. THIS EQUATED TO MORE THAN $393,188 IN ECONOMIC BENEFIT TO HOUSEHOLDS. CM SUSPENDED FACE TO FACE PROGRAMMING DUE TO THE PANDEMIC IN MARCH AND PILOTED VIRTUAL PROGRAM DELIVERY.
