DURFEE INNOVATION SOCIETY - THE DURFEE INNOVATION SOCIETY (DIS) EXISTS TO CREATE SUBSTANTIAL AND IMPACTFUL OPPORTUNITIES FOR DETROIT CHILDREN, FAMILIES AND SINGLE ADULTS IN THE AREAS OF EDUCATION, WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, AND HUMAN SERVICES WHILE ADVANCING CROSS-SECTOR COLLABORATION.IN 2019, MULTIPLE CAPITAL RENOVATIONS WERE COMPLETED WITHIN THE BUILDING INCLUDING AN EXTENSIVE HVAC PROJECT THAT ALLOWED FOR HEAT IN THE WINTER MONTHS. RENOVATIONS TO THE LOBBY AND AUDITORIUM WERE COMPLETED, AND LEASABLE SPACE WAS WHITEBOXED IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE OVER 90% OCCUPANCY BY YEAR END. FURTHERMORE, THE DIS PROJECT ACHIEVED SIGNIFICANT FUNDRAISING SUPPORT AND RECEIVED A CAPACITY BUILDING GRANT FROM THE BALLMER GROUP FOR $200,000/YEAR OVER THREE YEARS. AS A RESULT OF THE PARTNERSHIP WITH BALLMER GROUP, A NEW FOCUS ON IMPACT REPORTING CREATED A MORE SUSTAINABLE STRUCTURE AND MODEL FOR THE PROJECT. THE WORK AT THE DIS ALSO ALLOWED FOR CONTINUED RELATIONSHIP BUILDING WITH RESIDENTS OF THE COMMUNITY, SPECIFICALY WITH OUR LIFE REMODELED COMMUNITY ADVOCACY COUNCIL (LRCAC) AS WELL AS NEWLY FORMED LIFE REMODELED YOUTH ALLIANCES (LRYA) AT BOTH DURFEE ELEMENTARY-MIDDLE SCHOOL AND CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL.
SIX DAY PROJECT - EACH YEAR, LIFE REMODELED MOBILIZES 10,000 VOLUNTEERS OVER SIX DAYS TO CLEAR BLIGHT AND BEAUTIFY THE FOUR SQUARE MILES SURROUNDING OUR CURRENT OPPORTUNITY HUB, THE DURFEE INNOVATION SOCIETY. THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS OF UNIFYING FOR A COMMON MISSION, PARTICIPANTS FROM BOTH THE CITY AND THE SUBURBS BEGIN TO REALIZE HOW MUCH THEY RESPECT AND NEED EACH OTHER WHICH IS A CATALYST FOR LONG-TERM RELATIONSIHPS AND PARTNERSHIPS.IN 2019, WITH THE HELP OF 9,713 VOLUNTEERS FROM THE CITY AND SURROUNDING SUBURBS, WE WERE ABLE TO ADDRESS 257 HEAVILY BLIGHTED ALLEYWAYS SURROUNDING THE DURFEE INNOVATION SOCIETY, HOST A SUMMER CAMP FOR 125 CHILDREN AND A BASKETBALL CAMP FOR 37 YOUTH, AND OUR FAMILY FUN DAY (WITH THE LARGEST BOUNCE HOUSE IN THE WORLD) DREW IN MORE THAN 3,000 DETROIT CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES.
HOME REPAIRS - LIFE REMODELED PROVIDES ONE OF THREE QUALITY-OF-LIFE AFFECTING REPAIRS TO RESIDENTS IN OWNER-OCCUPIED HOMES: NEW WINDOWS, A NEW FURNACE OR A NEW ROOF. TO QUALIFY, INDIVIDUALS MUST LIVE WITHIN THE FOUR SQUARE-MILE SERVICE AREA SURROUNDING THE DURFEE INNOVATION SOCIETY, TO BE UP-TO-DATE ON THEIR PROPERTY TAXES OR BE ENROLLED IN A PAYMENT PLAN, AND BE ABLE TO PROVIDE PROOF OF INCOME.IN 2019, LIFE REMODELED COMPLETED 17 HOME REPAIRS IN COLLABORATION WITH A VARIETY OF LOCAL CONTRACTORS.
