Organizations Filed Purposes:
To help Detroit Youths excel academically by developing focus, discipline, creative thinking, spatial reasoning, character and strategic planning though education, arts, language, fitness and leadership programs and through the game of chess.
Competitive Scholastic Chess Teams:Approximately 140 students played on competitive chess teams sponsored by Young Detroit Thinkers during the last year. Young Detroit Thinkers provided coaching, organization, transportation, and opportunities for children to compete both locally and nationally. In 2017-2018 the teams traveled to tournaments in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, and Tennessee as well as numerous state and local tournaments. During 2017-2018 we offered chess instruction in two Detroit schools, as well as sponsoring a city-wide competitive scholastic team. The students were challenged daily to increase their knowledge, test their skills, and strengthen their character. Several players and teams won city, state, and national prizes.
Summer Camps: Young Detroit Thinkers offers an all-day free boy's theater camp (Boys Theater of Detroit). In 2018 the camp served approximately 30 students.
During 2017-2018, close to 300 students participated in a series of six Thinkers Challenge chess tournaments, for players of all levels ages K-12. The final tournament in the series included game analysis by a chess master.
