MIFMA ENGAGES IN FOOD ACCESS EFFORTS EACH YEAR TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF FARMERS MARKETS THAT ACCEPT FOOD ASSISTANCE BENEFITS AND TO SUPPORT MARKETS THAT DO. IN 2019 MIFMA STAFF ASSISTED FARMERS MARKETS AND FARMERS ACCEPTING SNAP IN APPLYING TO RECEIVE 54 WIRELESS POINT OF SALE DEVICES FUNDED BY THE STATE OF MICHIGAN.
MIFMA'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING CONSISTS OF CONFERENCES, THE MARKET MANAGER CERTIFICATE PROGRAM, AND FARMERS MARKETS AT THE CAPITOL EVENTS. IN 2019 MORE THAN 105 PARTICIPANTS ATTENDED A TWO-DAY CONFERENCE HELD BY MIFMA TO LEARN THE LATEST INFORMATION ABOUT FARMERS MARKET MANAGEMENT AND OPERATION. THE MARKET MANAGER CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO ENCOURAGE FARMETS MARKET MANAGERS TO PURSUE LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ON TOPICS ESSENTIAL TO MARKET MANAGEMENT. A TOTAL OF 259 MARKET MANAGERS HAVE BEEN CERTIFIED SINCE THE PROGRAM'S INCEPTION IN 2011. MIFMA HELD 3 FARMERS MARKET AT THE CAPITOL EVENTS IN 2019, WITH 103 VENDORS PARTICIPATING DURING THE MARKET SEASON AND OVER 20,270 ATTENDEES OVER THE THREE MARKETS.
