Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE MISSION OF THE HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL CENTER IS TO ENGAGE, TO EDUCATE AND TO EMPOWER BY REMEMBERING THE HOLOCAUST.
TO EDUCATE ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST THROUGH EXHIBITS, LIBRARY, PUBLIC PROGRAMS AND TEACHER TRAINING.
WE EDUCATED 65,000 PEOPLE IN 2019 ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST AND THE NEED TO FIGHT DISCRIMINATION, HATE CRIMES AND GENOCIDE. MANY OF THESE PEOPLE WERE STUDENTS WHO VISITED THE HMC WITH SCHOOL GROUPS AND WHO WERE EDUCATED THROUGH GUIDED TOURS FOLLOWED BY PRESENTATIONS BY LOCAL HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS. OTHERS TOURED THE HMC WITH THEIR FAMILIES, MADE USE OF OUR LIBRARY ARCHIVE, OR ATTENDED ON OR OFF-SITE PROGRAMMING WE PRESENTED. THESE VISITORS CAME FROM THROUGHOUT THE STATE, AS WELL AS MANY FROM OHIO, INDIANA AND ONTARIO. THEY REFLECT THE DIVERSE RACIAL AND RELIGIOUS COMPOSITION OF THIS REGION. WE ALSO OFFERED FREE AND SUBSIDIZED BUSING TO TITLE I SCHOOLS WHOSE TEACHERS HAD ATTENDED OUR TRAININGS, RESULTING IN VISITS FROM 2,819 STUDENTS FROM 36 SCHOOLS.
WE OPERATED OUR STATEWIDE EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAM, IN RESPONSE TO MICHIGAN'S NEW MANDATE THAT PUBLIC SCHOOLS PROVIDE 6 HOURS OF HOLOCAUST AND GENOCIDE EDUCATION TO STUDENTS IN GRADES 8-12. WE PROVIDED TRAINING SEMINARS TO 333 TEACHERS FROM 134 MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS, REPRESENTING 72 SCHOOL DISTRICTS. WE EMPOWERED TEACHERS TO USE THE LESSONS OF THE HOLOCAUST TO HELP STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THE DANGERS OF UNCHECKED HATRED AND TO LEARN THAT THEIR INDIVIDUAL DECISIONS MATTER. THESE TEACHERS TAUGHT THIS TO APPROXIMATELY 30,000 STUDENTS DURING THE 2019-20 SCHOOL YEAR. THIS IS IN ADDITION TO THE 65,000 PEOPLE WE EDUCATED THROUGH OUR MUSEUM. OUR EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES ALSO INCLUDED THE KAPPY FAMILY ANNE FRANK ART & WRITING COMPETITION FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, WHICH RECEIVED MORE THAN 300 ENTRIES.
WE PRESENTED A WIDE ARRAY OF PUBLIC PROGRAMS ON EVENINGS AND WEEKENDS INCLUDING MOVIES, LECTURES, FAMILY PROGRAMS AND AUTHOR PRESENTATIONS. HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR 2019 PROGRAMMING INCLUDED LECTURES ABOUT CONTEMPORARY GENOCIDES IN BURMA AND RWANDA, A PERFORMANCE BY THE MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND CHORAL ENSEMBLES OF SHOSTAKOVICH'S SYMPHONY NO. 13 COMMEMORATING THE BABI YAR MASSACRE DURING THE HOLOCAUST; A TALK BY A REFORMED WHITE NATIONALIST ABOUT LEAVING HATRED BEHIND; AND A SCREENING OF THE OSCAR-WINNING DOCUMENTARY "INTO THE ARMS OF STRANGERS" WITH A PRESENTATION BY ITS PRODUCER DEBORAH OPPENHEIMER.
