THE HAP CRIM FESTIVAL OF RACES BEGAN IN 1977 AS THE "BOBBY CRIM RACE FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS" BY MICHIGAN SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE BOBBY CRIM. THE INAUGURAL RACE'S MISSION WAS TO PROMOTE AND RAISE FUNDS FOR MICHIGAN SPECIAL OLYMPICS BY GIVING THE LOCAL REGION'S FASTEST RUNNERS THE CHANCE TO RACE WITH INTERNATIONAL ELITE RUNNERS. OVER THE PAST 43 YEARS, "THE CRIM" HAS EVOLVED INTO THE HAP CRIM FESTIVAL OF RACES, AND THE CRIM FITNESS FOUNDATION. WHILE IT STILL DRAWS ELITE RACERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, IT HAS GROWN IMMENSELY IN NUMBERS AND IN ITS MISSION. THE FESTIVAL NOW SERVES TO PROMOTE AND CELEBRATE HEALTHY, ACTIVE LIFESTYLES ALL YEAR LONG FOR PEOPLE OF ALL FITNESS LEVELS. THE FESTIVAL'S EVENTS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING VARYING DISTANCES, WHICH ARE ALWAYS HELD THE FOURTH SATURDAY OF AUGUST: 10 MILES, 5 MILE AND 5 KILOMETERS, AND A TEDDY BEAR TROT FOR CHILDREN. THE FESTIVAL'S ONE-MILE RACES, KNOWN AS THE MICHIGAN MILE RACE SERIES, NOW TAKE PLACE ON THE FRIDAY BEFORE THE OTHER LONGER RACES, AND HAS EXTENDED THE FESTIVAL TO A TWO-DAY EVENT. THE CRIM'S FLAGSHIP 10 MILE RACE HAS GROWN TO BE THE FOURTH LARGEST RACE OF ITS SIZE IN THE NATION AND THE LARGEST IN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN. THE EVENT IS WIDELY RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE MOST POSITIVE AND IMPORTANT ANNUAL EVENTS THAT TAKES PLACE IN THE CITY OF FLINT AND GENESEE COUNTY. 2019'S CRIM HOSTED MORE THAN 11,672 PARTICIPANTS AND ANOTHER 45,000 SPECTATORS. 48 PERCENT OF THE PARTICIPANTS ARE FROM GENESEE COUNTY. THIS WAS THE FIRST YEAR IN THE CRIM'S HISTORY THAT THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS FROM OUTSIDE GENESEE COUNTY EXCEEDED THOSE FROM WITHIN. THE REMAINING 42 PERCENT ARE FROM CITIES THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF MICHIGAN, THE UNITED STATES, AND EVEN FROM AROUND THE WORLD. RACERS FROM 32 OF THE UNITED STATES PARTICIPATED IN THE 2019 CRIM. THE HAP CRIM FESTIVAL OF RACES IS THE SINGLE GREATEST EMBODIMENT OF THE CRIM FITNESS FOUNDATION'S MISSION OF PROMOTING HEALTHY, ACTIVE LIFESTYLES AND BRINGING COMMUNITIES TOGETHER FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE GREATER FLINT AREA. HAP CONTINUED AS THE NEW TITLE SPONSOR OF THIS EVENT IN 2019. VOLUNTEERS: MORE THAN 2500 COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS DEVOTED THEIR TIME AND RESOURCES TO MAKING THE FESTIVAL A SUCCESS IN 2019. IN THE SPRING OF 2019 1,521 PEOPLE TOOK TO THE STREETS OF GENESEE COUNTY AS PARTICIPANTS OF THE CRIMFIT ADULT TRAINING PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM'S MOST BASIC GOAL IS TO HELP PARTICIPANTS TO TRAIN AND PREPARE TO COMPLETE A HAP CRIM FESTIVAL OF RACES EVENT IN AUGUST. HOWEVER, ITS GREATER PURPOSE AND DEEPER IMPACT LIES IN THE GOOD HEALTH AND WELLNESS HABITS THAT IT HELPS ESTABLISH FOR EACH PARTICIPANT, THEIR FRIENDS AND THEIR FAMILIES. FOR 15 WEEKS, THE CRIMFIT ADULT TRAINING PROGRAM BECOMES AN INTEGRAL PART OF A PARTICIPANT'S LIFE AND ITS BENEFITS CARRY OVER INTO ALL AREAS OF LIFE. THE PROGRAM PUTS PARTICIPANTS ON THE RIGHT TRACK TOWARD A HEALTHIER, ACTIVE LIFESTYLE. THE PROGRAM HAS AN ADDED VALUE OF CREATING A STRONGER SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND PERSON-TO-PERSON CONNECTION AMONG PARTICIPANTS. SINCE 2012, AN ADDITIONAL MISSION-BASED COMPONENT OF THE CRIMFIT ADULT TRAINING PROGRAM HAS BEEN GROWING IN PARTICIPATION AND IMPACT. THE FLINT COMMUNITY TRAINING PROGRAM APPLIES THE CRIMFIT TRAINING MODEL AND MAKES IT AVAILABLE TO PEOPLE IN THE CITY OF FLINT WHO MAY NOT BE OTHERWISE ABLE TO PAY FOR THE PROGRAM OR HAVE TRANSPORTATION TO MEET FOR GROUP WORKOUTS. THE FCTP WORKS WITH LOCAL CHURCHES, SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO FORM RUNNING AND WALKING CLUBS. PARTICIPANTS CAN REGISTER AT A DRASTICALLY REDUCED RATE, AND TRAIN IN OR CLOSE TO THEIR OWN NEIGHBORHOOD. THE CITY OF FLINT WAS CHOSEN AS THE TARGET AREA BECAUSE OF THE FREQUENCY OF MAJOR HEALTH RISKS THAT CAN BE GREATLY REDUCED THROUGH REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. ALL CRIMFIT PARTICIPANTS ARE ENTERED INTO THE HAP CRIM FESTIVAL OF RACES EVENT OF THEIR CHOICE. VOLUNTEERS: MORE THAN 200 VOLUNTEERS HELP FACILITATE THE CRIMFIT ADULT TRAINING PROGRAM BY PARTICIPATING AS TRAINING GROUP LEADERS DURING THE DURATION OF THE 15-WEEK PROGRAM.
