Organizations Filed Purposes: THE FOOD BANK OF EASTERN MICHIGAN'S MISSION IS TO BE THE FOOD SOURCE FOR PEOPLE IN NEED. PARTNERING WITH ORGANIZATIONS TO FEED THE HUNGRY, WE ADVOCATE AND BUILD A COMMUNITY SOLUTION TO A COMMUNITY PROBLEM. BY LEVERAGING AN ABUNDANCE OF PRODUCT FROM A MULTITUDE OF SOURCES, WE "CHANGE THE FACE OF HUNGER."

AS EASTERN MICHIGAN'S LEADING HUNGER-RELIEF ORGANIZATION, THE FOOD BANK SOURCES AND DISTRIBUTES FOOD, BOTH PURCHASED AND RESCUED, TO HUNGRY RESIDENTS IN OUR 22-COUNTY SERVICE AREA. COLLABORATING WITH 700 HUNGER RELIEF PARTNERS; SUCH AS, SCHOOLS, SOUP KITCHENS, SHELTERS, AND HUMAN SERVICE AGENCIES, THE FOOD BANK IS A VITAL COMPONENT IN THE BATTLE AGAINST HUNGER. THE FOOD BANK IS A CONTRACT RECLAMATION SITE WITH SEVEN CORPORATE RETAILERS (ALDI'S, COSTCO, KROGER, MEIJER, SAM'S CLUB, TARGET AND WALMART) VIA 73 STORE LOCATIONS; AND PROVIDES DISASTER RELIEF MOBILE DISTRIBUTIONS DURING PUBLIC EMERGENCIES. LAST YEAR 51 MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD SUPPORTED MORE THAN 350,000 FOOD INSECURE INDIVIDUALS, WITH OVER HALF OF THE FOOD COMPRISED OF FRESH PRODUCE, MEAT AND DAIRY. THE FOOD BANK HAS SOLIDIFIED ITSELF AS THE "FOOD SOURCE" IN EASTERN MICHIGAN AND HAS BECOME THE AUTHORITY ON ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF THE HUNGRY. PRE-COVID-19 PANDEMIC, 1 IN 6 PEOPLE OR 14% OF EASTERN MICHIGAN RESIDENTS STRUGGLED WITH HUNGER AND FOOD INSECURITY. SINCE MID-MARCH 2020, THE FOOD BANK OF EASTERN MICHIGAN HAS SEEN AN INCREASE OF MORE THAN 40% IN NEED FOR ITS SERVICES-DISTRIBUTING OVER 51 MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD THROUGHOUT 22 EASTERN MICHIGAN COUNTIES. TO ACCOMMODATE BOTH THE INCREASED NEED, AND TO COMPLY WITH SOCIAL DISTANCING GUIDELINES, PROGRAMS AND SERVICES WERE PROMPTLY MODIFIED AT THE ONSET OF THE PANDEMIC. FEEDING AMERICA PROJECTS THAT NEARLY 16% OR MORE THAN 1.6 MILLION MICHIGANDERS WILL STRUGGLE WITH FOOD INSECURITY IN 2021. EVEN MORE CONCERNING, NEARLY 1 IN 5 CHILDREN DO NOT HAVE CONSISTENT ACCESS TO FOOD. OUR PROGRAMS FOCUS ON FEEDING FAMILIES HEALTHY, NUTRITIOUS FOOD, INCLUDING FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES, PROTEIN, DAIRY, AND SHELF-STABLE OPTIONS THAT CAN BE USED TO CREATE WELL-BALANCED MEALS. MOBILE FOOD PANTRIES AND PANTRIES THAT PARTNER WITH THE FOOD BANK VIA SCHOOLS, CHURCHES, COLLEGES, HEALTH AGENCIES AND OTHER COMMUNITY AFFILIATES; COME TOGETHER TO FORM A NETWORK OF 700 HUNGER RELIEF PARTNERS. PROGRAMS SUCH AS SENIOR BOX, SCHOOL BACKPACK, AND CHILDREN'S FEEDING PROGRAMS PROVIDE HEALTHY FOOD TO SOME OF OUR MOST VULNERABLE POPULATIONS.
