Organizations Filed Purposes:
KEVIN'S SONG IS A CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO GENERATING PUBLIC AWARENESS ABOUT THE CAUSES OF SUICIDE, ITS PREVALENCE IN OUR SOCIETY AND POSSIBLE PREVENTIVE MEASURES. AS AN ORGANIZATION, WE WANT TO CREATE A WORKING COMMUNITY OF PROFESSIONALS AND ADVOCATES THAT WILL BECOME THE GO-TO RESOURCE IN THE METROPOLITAN DETROIT AREA FOR OFFERING KNOWLEDGE, HOPE AND HEALING TO INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES TOUCHED BY SUICIDE.
DOCUMENTARY FILM: A 30-minute educational documentary film was created by Kevins Song entitled We Need to Talk. It profiled effective suicide prevention initiatives in Michigan schools and communities. The film was created to premiere at the School Summit and subsequently be available for use by educators throughout Michigan. It is available on the Kevins Song website at www.kevinssong.org.
SUICIDE EDUCATION AND AWARENESS: In 2019 a School Summit Committee was established whose goal was to plan a School Summit that would take place in conjunction with our 4th Annual Conference in January 2020. The Committee was made up of teachers, school counselors, parents, and administrators from public, independent, parochial and charter schools throughout the Metro Detroit area. They successfully met their objectives of researching resources available to assist educators in promoting mental health and preventing suicides and of creating an atmosphere where educators could meet and connect with colleagues from throughout Michigan to discuss resources and best practices in suicide prevention. Throughout 2019 the Conference Planning Committee met monthly to plan Kevins Songs 4th Annual Conference on Suicide: Advocacy in Action, scheduled to take place January 23-25, 2020 at The Inn at St. Johns in Plymouth, Michigan.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH: KEVIN'S SONG HAS BEEN INVITED TO SPEAK TO VARIOUS GROUPS, PARTICIPATE IN MENTAL HEALTH FORUMS, SERVE ON PANELS AND HAS BECOME A RELIABLE RESOURCE IN SUICIDE PREVENTION. KEVIN'S SONG IS BEING RECOGNIZED NOT ONLY IN THE METROPOLITAN DETROIT AREA, BUT THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF MICHIGAN AS WELL AS NATIONWIDE FOR ITS PROGRAMMING AND COMMITMENT TO PROVIDE RESOURCES FOR THOSE WHO HAVE LOST A LOVED ONE TO SUICIDE, ARE SUFFERING WITH THOUGHTS OF SUICIDE OR ARE LOOKING FOR WAYS TO PREVENT SUICIDE.Kevins Songs Education Task Force developed and printed 1000 Parent Tool Kits which provide important suicide prevention information for parents. These have been distributed widely. In addition, the ETF sponsored and collaborated with other community mental health nonprofits to present programming for the community on mental health and suicide prevention.. Kevins Song instituted two support groups: a Support Group for Suicide Loss Survivors that meets twice a month in Grosse Pointe Farms, and a Support Group for Attempt Survivors that meets twice a month, once in Royal Oak, and once in Madison Heights. Both of these support groups are facilitated by trained professionals.Kevins Song in partnership with Detroit Public Television and The Childrens Foundation planned and executed an hour-long panel discussion on suicide prevention that aired on Detroit Public Television in December 2019.Kevins Song continued to organize its With One Voice initiative. This effort is aimed at organizing an assembly of mental health providers and advocacy organizations, business and community leaders, and others to effectively promote meaningful change in suicide prevention across the State of Michigan, including support of the Governors 2020 Michigan Suicide Prevention Plan. Numerous planning meetings took place in Metro Detroit and in Lansing.
