Organizations Filed Purposes: We expect to entertain, encourage critical thought, and inspire through the presentation of theatrical expressions of new works, reinvented classics, and imaginative adaptations for the stage.

In 2019-20, Parallel 45 Theatre marked its 10th anniversary. We planned to commemorate this milestone by engaging more audience, producing more theatre, employing more artists, and making a greater impact on our community, building on the success of our 2019 inaugural summer season in rotating repertory. We began the season in November/December 2019 with an original production, The Alphabet Experience. Hundreds of families enjoyed this interactive theatrical experience over its 2-week run at City Opera House, where it was presented as part of its 125th anniversary season. In early spring, we found ourselves in the midst of a world-wide pandemic. After watching summer theatres cancel programming across our nation, and reviewing projections for COVID-19 in Michigan, it became clear that bringing 55+ artists from around the world (many of them from viral hotspots) to our community already challenged by over-burdened medical infrastructure would not be good leadership or good stewardship of our greatest resource: our people. We could not put the safety of our artists, patrons, and staff at risk by requiring interstate (and international) travel, communal dormitory living, and high-physical contact during a time when the illness was projected to be at its peak. Therefore, our summer festival season was cancelled and replaced with entirely outdoor, socially-distanced educational programming for youth, ages 8-18. While the majority of our annual activities were paused due to the global health crisis, some activities remained, such as our Theatre for Young Audiences New Works Commission, commissioned in summer 2020 from Yale Drama Prize-winner Jaqueline Goldfinger and our Director Residency at Interlochen Arts Academy, held in March 2020. New programming was also added, including a summer slate of mission-driven virtual programming, featuring co-productions with The MITTEN Lab artist residency and the Traverse City Dance Project. We achieved this resilience with the help of hundreds of individual, government, corporate, and foundation supporters.
