D2N'S mission is to provide sustainable support to grassroots, community-based programs in Detroit neighborhoods and remote villages in Nepal.
School Reconstruction The rebuilding of Kalika School in Rakha, consisting of three blocks of classrooms was completed in June 2019, The school was funded with remainder of monies allocated for our other 11 schools. Because the original 11 schools planned were engineered, managed and built so efficiently, money remained at the end allowing an unplanned 12th school to be built.
Baspani Health Post and Birthing Center Rendered uninhabitable by the 2015 earthquake, the Baspani Health Post and Birthing Center (HPBC.)with a staff of six people, had been temporarily housed in two small rooms in the local school. In the fall of 2019 D2N completed and moved them into the new building. The new health post has four rooms, a storeroom and a bathroom. Two toilets are housed in a detached structure. The HPBC serves approximately 2125 people in the area.
The Building Better Men was started in 1991 by Odis Bellinger and founded on the principle that young men can be successful despite challenges associated with absent fathers. Their goal is to enable young men to become productive members of society. This goal is accomplished with small reading groups, interactive group workshops, individual counseling, relevant participant role-play, male encouragement conferences, educational collegiate tours, and recreational field trips. These components of the program teach social and personal responsibility, decision-making, leadership skills, critical thinking and literacy skills.
