Organizations Filed Purposes: VALUING INDIVIDUALS AND BUILDING COMMUNITY IN SOUTHWESTERN KENT COUNTY BY PROVIDING FOOD, MATERIALS AND EDUCATION ASSISTANCE TO MEET BASIC NEEDS, IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE AND PROMOTE SELF-SUFFICIENCY.

IN OUR EFFORTS TO PROVIDE A CULTURE OF HEALTH UCOM PROVIDED NUTRIENT-RICH FOODS, INCLUDING FRESH PRODUCE AND PROTEIN IN 20,277 INDIVIDUAL SERVICES WITH GROCERIES THAT ATTEMPT TO PROVIDE 304,155 NUTRITIOUS MEALS. UCOM CONTINUED OUR FARM TO PANTRY CSA PROGRAM WHERE 15-20 FAMILIES MET WEEKLY FOR THREE MONTHS TO LEARN ABOUT NUTRITION, COOKING, AND PRESERVING TECHNIQUES. UCOMS GROWING GREEN NEIGHBORS GARDENING CLUB MET MONTHLY FOR A MEAL, A PRESENTATION, AND A QUESTION AND RESPONSE SESSION. THIS INCLUDED 20-40 URBAN GARDENERS BENEFITING FROM OUR FREE COMMUNITY AND INDIVIDUAL 4X4 GARDENS. UCOMS FARMSTAND HAD 2,170 SALES OF HALF-PRICED LOCALLY GROWN FRUITS AND VEGETABLES TO OUR LOW TO MODERATE-INCOME NEIGHBORS. ADDITIONAL UCOM CLASSES INCLUDING OUR EAT YOUR WAY TO HEALTH COOKING CLASSES, WALKING CLUB, NATURE CENTER FIELD TRIPS, SIT AND BE FIT EXCERCISE CLASS, AND MORE GAVE OUR NEIGHBORS 58 CLASS OPPORTUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AND PROVIDED 538 CLASS HRS TO ATTENDEES.

UCOMS WORKFORCE DELEVOPMENT PROGRAM SERVED 97 PARTICIPANTS IN 2019. THEY RANGED IN AGE FROM 16 TO 72 AND INCLUDED YOUTH, WOMEN AND MEN OF MULTIPLE RACES AND ETHNICITIES. INDIVIDUALS MET WITH UCOMS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT MANAGER TO SET ACADEMIC, PROFESSIONAL OR FINANCIAL STABILITY GOALS. GUIDANCE WAS GIVEN TO IDENTIFY AND IMPLEMENT STEPS TOWARD REACHING THOSE GOALS. SERVICES WERE TAILORED TO EACH PARTICIPANT AND MAY HAVE INCLUDED RESUME WRITING, INTERVIEW SKILLS, JOB SEARCHING SUPPORT, BARRIER RESOLUTION, NEW HIRE COACHING, ENROLLMENT IN COLLEGE OR TRADE SCHOOL, GED COMPLETION OR RESOURCE CONNECTION TO REDUCE BARRIERS TO SUCCESS.

FINANCIAL LITERACY PROGRAMMING REACHED 256 PEOPLE IN 2019. THROUGH MULTI-WEEK CLASSES, SINGLE TOPIC WORKSHOPS AND ONE-ON-ONE FINANCIAL COACHING,PARTICIPANTS WERE GIVEN TOOLS AND GUIDANCE TO ADDRESS FINANCIAL GOALS. PARTICIPANTS RANGED IN AGE FROM HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS THROUGH RETIREES.
