The Show-Me Curriculum Administrators Association (SMCAA) will provide support to member school districts for the development, implementation, and evaluation of local curriculum which is aligned to the Missouri Show-Me Standards, Grade Level Expectations, and that results in enhanced student achievement.(unchanged since initial-1998)
SMCAA provided two statewide curriculum conferences attended by 304 teachers, curriculum leaders and administrators in 2019-2020. The focus for the year was quality teaching in the content areas. Our Fall Conference was held October 29-30, 2019 titled, Instruction and Assessment That Counts! Dr. John SanGiovanni spoke to the group about innovative strategies in Mathematics. Ms. Jana Loge focused on assessment design. SMCAA also held a winter Curriculum Symposium focused on Science curriculum and Instruction. Our state department Science Curriculum Director, Mrs. Kristen McKinney, and Roblyn Melton, SMCAA board member, led a panel of experts to answer questions regarding Science instruction and assessment issues. Day Two, Mrs. McKinney was joined by a team of Science experts from a local school district, that spoke to specific curriculum and instructional issues happening in real time. We ended the Symposium with Mollie Bolton, local district director of special education, shared ideas on how to adjust assessment to meet our special needs student population. Over 160 attended this event. Activity objective: To provide a platform through state-wide conferences to address the ongoing changes in curriculum, instruction and assessment necessary for districts to prepare for teaching and learning shifts coming in the next two or more years.
SMCAA conducted 58 days of in-district travel conducting curriculum workshops with the objective of helping public school teachers and administrators understand the elements of effective curriculum and develop curriculum in subject specific areas aligned to the State Standards. In addition, much district work was targeted on instructional observation and evaluation and providing quality feedback to teachers. Also, one-to-three-day trainings were offered in Champion Teaching in 9 school districts and as a regional offering in two locations across the state. In addition, training sessions were presented on effective writing and implementation of common assessments focused on conceptual teaching and learning. As support for our member districts, we added a new regional training in Observation and Feedback. A total of 84 attendees took advantage of these regional offerings.Activity objective: To guide classroom teachers and administrators in the fine art of Champion Teaching through consistent use of effective techniques that address classroom management, student engagement and lesson planning and execution. To assist districts in their work toward the development of a standardized curriculum that provides instructional clarity and promotes high achievement. To assist building leaders in observation, feedback and evaluation of the instructional process.
In addition, SMCAA held Regional Curriculum meetings at 10 locations across the state in September 2019 and January and March of 2020. These would be our last in person regional meetings with a total of 232 participants.
