Ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community so that no one faces cancer alone.
Classes and workshops: GCKC offers educational workshops, including the "Frankly Speaking About Cancer" series, which focuses on specific cancer diagnoses as well as other topics such as Talking to Children About Cancer and Managing the Cost of Care. Healthy Lifestyle classes include nutrition, gentle exercise, stress-reduction, expressive art and others. Some classes are offered in Spanish. All classes are free, and all materials and supplies are provided. Each class/workshop is overseen by a licensed mental health professional, as therapeutic opportunities occur. The Executive and Program Director provide outreach and educational presentations to community groups. In 2019, there were 852 sessions.
Counseling and Support Groups: Gilda's Club Kansas City (GCKC) offers professionally facilitated short-term counseling and support groups for all people impacted by all cancers. Groups include Living with Loss and more. A group is conducted in Spanish in Wyandotte County. Counseling and specialized programs for treatment decision making and distress screening also are offered. Kid Support and Families Connect include a professionally led structured group for children ages 4-14 who have a loved one with cancer, while the parents participate in a facilitated group. All groups are led by licensed mental health professionals trained in the Gilda's Club evidence-based model. Program specialists also provide resource referral including the uninsured and underinsured. In 2019, there were 590 sessions.
Social activities and events: GCKC was established as a community of support. Social activities provide a sense of community and connection to others and emphasize that cancer is not one's definition of self. Social activities include a weekly potluck meal, as well as comedy nights, game nights, a Night of Remembrance and more. Licensed mental health professionals are present as a therapeutic opportunity could occur. GCKC also opens the Clubhouse for community Open House events. In 2019, there were 54 sessions.
