The mission of Heartland Chamber Music (HCM) is to connect, engage and inspire students of all ages and backgrounds through a lifetime of music education and performance.
Festival-Like all arts organizations across the world we learned to adapt our model when the pandemic struck and made making music together in person impossible. Our strong partnership with the Carlsen Center at Johnson County Community College allowed us to transition our annual, internationally recognized summer chamber festival to a first ever virtual festival in 2020. 66 students and alumni ages 10-76 attended from all over the U.S. and three other continents to work with 15 HCM faculty members and our two artists in residence, the Grammy Award-Winning Parker Quartet and Mr.Frank Huang of the New York Philharmonic. Heartland Chamber Music (HCM) will celebrate its 20th Anniversary in February of 2021.
String Spouts finished out the 2020 fourth quarter online as well due to the pandemic, but our students didn't miss even one lesson thanks to our dedicated teachers who worked tirelessly to establish our online learning. 78 students and their caregiver/parent from 3 public school districts in the KC metro and the Hiersteiner Development Center received 256 lessons over the course of the year. Students learned 67 pieces of music, 43 musical pieces were composed by students and 56 students performed solos sometime during the course of the year. Kansas City Symphony musicians performed 24 onsite concerts and 8 virtual concerts for Sprouts and their families. While we were unable to host our annual Sprouts & The Symphony concert at the end of the year, Sprouts received 12 online lessons during the summer.
HCM Hall Pass concerts were performed for over 600 under-served students during FY 2020. Concerts are designed by the HCM Alumni and Sprouts teachers and this year performances were held at Truman Hart Benton Elementary in Independence,MO public schools and Holliday Montessori in the Kansas City,MO public school district. The final Hall Pass concert was performed at the Guadalupe Centers for students and their families. These concerts are taken to locations that often have no exposure to classical music concerts.
