Start at Zero's mission is partnering with parents and caregivers to promote healthy early childhood development.
Family Visiting: A Parent Educator certified in the Parents as Teachers curriculum visits families with children age 0-5 to coach parents on how to support their child's healthy development and make connections to resources that lead to increased parent empowerment, family stability, and well being.Family Visits are completed at schools, homes, clinics, and/or in other community locations and the program is modeled to retain flexibility to identify where parents are in the parenting continuum and taylor services to meet their needs. Family Visiting has a menu of available services, including short and long-term home visiting, developmental screenings, and extensive guided referral and resource connections.
Playgroups: Playgroups provide a 60 to 90 minute preschool-like environment where young children and their parents/caregivers participate in fun, educational activities to ensure children are prepared for kindergarten. This also provides authentic opportunities for parents/caregivers to create social connections and to get to know other families in their community. Start at Zero Playgroups are facilitated by a Program Coordinator and Community Education Workers who welcome families, prepare activities, and guide the playgroup.
Learning Check-Ups: During a Learning Check-Up, a family with a child age 0-5 meets one-on-one with a Parent Educator to complete a developmental screening. This screening captures a snapshot of where the child is developmentally. The screening will include evaluation of 5 domains: language, gross motor (using arms and legs), fine motor (using fingers and hands), problem-solving, and social/emotional skills. The check-up identifies a child's strengths as well as developmental areas they need to focus on.
