Organizations Filed Purposes:
TO CHANGE LIVES THROUGH THE TRAINING AND PLACEMENT OF SERVICE DOGS FOR DISABLED VETERANS AND CHILDREN WITH AUTISM.
RETRIEVING FREEDOM'S GOAL IS TO PROMOTE AWARENESS THROUGH PUBLIC EDUCATION TO ITS COLUNTEERS, DONORS, RECIPIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. BY SHOWCASING THE TALENTS OUR SERVICE DOGS HAVE, WE ARE ABLE TO PROVIDE A NEW SENSE OF INDEPENDENCE TO OUR RECIPIENTS AS WELL AS THEIR FAMILIES AND/OR PARTNER'S LIVES THAT THEY MAY NOT HAVE HAD IN THE PAST. RETRIEVING FREEDOM CHANGES LIVES EVERY DAY WITH THEIR VOLUNTEER AND COLLEGE IMPACT PROGRAMS THAT ASSIST IN THE TRAINING AND RAISING OF THE SERVICE DOGS WHILE IN TRAINING. IN 2019, RFI WAS ABLE TO PLACE 11 DOGS TO FAMILIES WHO HAVE A CHILD WITH AUTISM, AND PLACED 14 DOGS WITH VETERANS SUFFERING FROM PTSD, PHYSICAL OR MOBILITY CHALLENGES.
COLLEGE LEVEL COURSES ARE BEING TAUGHT WITH 10-14 SERVICE DOGS EACH SEMESTER IN COMBINATION WITH THE LEADERSHIP AND SOCIAL WORK DIVISIONS ON WARTBURG'S COLLEGE CAMPUS IN WAVERLY, IA. STUDENTS ARE MATCHED WITH DOGS IN TRAINING AND SOMETIMES RECIPIENTS TO HELP WITH BASIC TRAINING AND SOCIAL INTEGRATION. THE COURSES ARE DESIGNED TO ALLOW THE STUDENTS A HANDS-ON LEARNING APPROACH TOWARDS THEIR FUTURE DEGREE.
WE PARTNER WITH THE UNDERGRADUATE ANIMAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY, WHERE STUDENTS GET HANDS ON LEARNING IN AREAS SUCH AS CANINE COMMUNICATION, DEVELOPMENT, TRAINING AND BEHAVIOR REVOLVING AROUND THE SERVICE DOG INDUSTRY AND HOW THESE AREAS CAN ASSIST INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES. THESE LESSONS ARE FACILITATED THROUGH INTRODUCTORY TRAINING OF DOGS FOR FUTURE SERVICE WORK. THIS CLASS PROVIDES ADDITIONAL CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDIVIDUALS FOCUSING WITHIN THE CANINE INDUSTRY." WE PARTNER WITH TWO MAJOR CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES IN THE UNITED STATES ALLOWING A PRE-SCREENED POPULATION OF INCARCERATED INDIVIDUALS, A MAJORITY OF THEM BEING INCARCERATED VETERANS, THE OPPORTUNITY TO FOSTER AND PROVIDE BASIC TRAINING TO DOGS FOR FUTURE SERVICE WORK UNDER THE DIRECT TUTELAGE OF OUR PROFESSIONAL STAFF. THESE PROGRAMS ACCLIMATE SERVICE DOGS IN TRAINING TO THE STRUCTURED LIFE OF FUTURE SERVICE WORK WHILE PROVIDING A WORK DISCIPLINE FOR INDIVIDUALS ONCE THEY REENTER SOCIETY. THESE PROGRAMS ARE DEPENDENT ON A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT FROM THE SELECTED GROUP AND BUILD HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN THE FACILITY WHILE PROVIDING A THERAPEUTIC BENEFIT TO THE FACILITIES AS A WHOLE.
