TO PROVIDE CONTINUED REVENUE SOURCE FOR THE CHAMBER'S ECONOMIC DEV. PROGRAM; ASSISTING BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY AND ATTRACTING NEW BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY TO THE REGION.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS - IN 2019, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STAFF MANAGED MORE THAN 22 ACTIVE PROJECTS AND COORDINATED 6 PROJECTS TO ANNOUNCEMENT IN THE SPRINGFIELD REGION, WHICH IS THE MOST TANGIBLE RETURN ON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT INVESTMENT. IN TOTAL, THE SBDC ASSISTED IN THE CREATION OF 312 NEW JOBS FOR RESIDENTS, RESULTING IN $12.4M IN NEW PAYROLL THAT WILL BE SPENT IN THE REGIONAL ECONOMY AND SPURRING $44.8M IN NEW CAPITAL BEING INVESTED IN THE REGION.
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT - DURING THE LAST YEAR, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STAFF CONTINUED WITH AN AGGRESSIVE APPROACH TO ASSISTING EXISTING COMPANIES AS THEY CONSIDERED GROWTH OPTIONS AND BRINGING NEW COMPANIES TO THE AREA. TO DO THIS, STAFF, AT THE DIRECTION OF THE SBDC BOARD, MET FACE-TO-FACE WITH THE TOP LEADERSHIP OF 152 COMPANIES TO CLEAR BARRIERS FOR GROWTH AND SECURE THEIR PRESENCE IN THE REGION AS WELL AS WITH 114 SITE SELECTION CONSULTANTS WHO ADVISE A MULTITUDE OF COMPANIES ON THEIR LOCATION DECISIONS. ALL OF THIS WAS DONE WITH THE GOAL TO MAKE SPRINGFIELD MORE COMPETITIVE IN JOB CREATION AND CAPITAL INVESTMENT.
WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT - IN ORDER TO MEET THE MOST PRESSING NEED OF EXISTING BUSINESSES, NEWLY ATTRACTED BUSINESSES AND START-UP COMPANIES, THE SBDC HAS SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED ITS FOCUS ON WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT. STAFF ADMINISTERS SIGNIFICANT PROGRAMS FOCUSED ON DEVELOPING TALENT WITHIN THE EXISTING EDUCATION SYSTEM, ATTRACTING TALENT TO THE REGION FROM OUTSIDE THE AREA AND RETAINING TALENT ALREADY IN THE REGION OR ATTENDING SCHOOL IN THE REGION. ALL OF THESE EFFORTS WILL GIVE SPRINGFIELD A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE NOW AND INTO THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE.
