Organizations Filed Purposes:
Missouri Appleseed develops solutions to problems in our communities with the goal of providing all Missourians an opportunity to live healthy, dignified, and productive lives.
Criminal Justice Reform - Missouri Appleseed hosted a Continuing Legal Education program on Mental Health Issues in the criminal justice system. The program took place in June 2019 and 69 people participated including judges and lawyers. Missouri Appleseed has also engaged in primary caretaker advocacy through public education and advocacy. Primary Caretaker advocacy supports giving judges discretion to keep offenders convicted of nonviolent crimes in the community and out of jail or prison so they can continue to care for their dependent children and/or family members. As part of our advocacy, we have worked with formerly incarcerated individuals and individuals who have had parents incarcerated. In addition, Missouri Appleseed has researched and advocated for expanded expungement laws in Missouri. Specifically, Missouri Appleseed supports reducing the time individuals must wait to apply for expungement and reducing the amount of money an individual must pay to file for expungement.
Prison Reform- Missouri Appleseed has conducted extensive research on access to feminine hygiene products in Missouri's prisons and jails. Missouri Appleseed has worked with prison wardens and jail administrators to improve access to feminine hygiene products for incarcerated women. Lack of access to feminine hygiene products can lead to severe health problems for women. We have also worked with state and local lawmakers to improve access.
Public Health- Missouri Appleseed has worked to change Missouri's policy of terminating Medicaid when an individual is incarcerated. We have conducted extensive research, worked to educate the public through media and other communications, and worked with state executive officials and lawmakers. We continue to raise awareness of the issue so the policy change will be implemented.
